Andrew Garfield and Sam Altman are in a very polite standoff over what may or may not have happened on a San Francisco sidewalk. The OpenAI CEO says he waved at the actor while “Artificial“ was filming outside his home. Garfield says he was not there, never saw Altman, and has no memory of any wave. Both sides are sticking to their version.
What Sam Altman Said Happened
The story began in an interview Altman gave to Vanity Fair in October 2026. Altman described a morning when he walked down his street to get coffee and found cameras and crew set up near his house. He noticed a man dressed exactly like him, carrying the same backpack, and walking in a way that felt uncomfortably familiar.
“We waved and went on, but it was really weird. I mean, it’s like a strange thing to see someone that has nailed your kind of quirky mannerisms or whateverโฆI waved at him that one time and that was it.”
An OpenAI representative later repeated Altman’s account to GQ, saying Altman was home during the filming and that he did wave at Garfield. The company has not backed away from the CEO’s version.
Andrew Garfield’s Side of the Street
Garfield responded in a GQ interview published on Wednesday, November 4, 2026. The actor did not soften his answer. Asked what the moment felt like from his side, Garfield said plainly: “I wasn’t there.”
He then explained that he had watched Altman’s interview and replayed it several times, trying to work out what the CEO meant.
“I never had any interaction with him. I’ve never seen him in real life. We were shooting outside of his house. It was an eerie day, for sure. We were told that he wasn’t home and his security people were there. I think I saw one security guard.”
Garfield added that he did not use a body double that day, which rules out the simplest explanation for a mix-up. He suggested Altman may have mistaken someone else for him.
“But, no, I never saw Sam, so he maybe mistook someone else for me. I have no idea, but I’ve never waved at Sam. I’ve never seen him. I was curious about that.”
The actor had already addressed the waving story once before, at the film’s London premiere in October 2026. At that event, he said, “I would have remembered” if the wave had actually happened. His position has not changed.
What “Artificial” Is and Why It Put Garfield on Altman’s Street
“Artificial” is directed by Luca Guadagnino and written by former Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich. The film dramatizes the five-day period in November 2023 when Altman was removed as OpenAI CEO and then brought back. The story focuses on the boardroom chaos inside one of the world’s most watched AI companies.
Garfield plays Altman. The cast includes Yura Borisov as OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever, Monica Barbaro as former CTO Mira Murati, Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk, and Mark Rylance as Geoffrey Hinton. Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, and Chris O’Dowd also appear.
The project had a complicated path to the screen. Amazon MGM Studios dropped the film in June 2026, and Netflix, A24, and Focus Features all passed before Neon picked it up. The film premiered at the New York Film Festival on October 5, 2026.
Release Details for Global Audiences
“Artificial” opens in select U.S. theaters on December 25, 2026, with a wider expansion planned for January 2027. The UK release is scheduled for January 22, 2027. The film has already screened at festivals, and early reactions have called it a tense, cold look at tech power. Audiences in Canada, Australia, and India should check local listings closer to the January window, as Neon’s international rollout is still taking shape.
The Real Unease Behind the Wave Story
Garfield has spoken about the pressure of playing a living person with enormous influence. In the same GQ interview, he admitted he feels some fear now that the film is close to release.
“It’s the artist’s responsibility to reflect the times we’re in, and I think it’s getting harder and harder to do that without fear of consequences from those in power.”
He also addressed the possibility of being linked to Altman permanently because of the role.
“I don’t want to make really powerful enemies. I don’t want to do that, but I’m not saying that that’s certainly what’s going to happen, but I don’t know if he’s going to feel warm towards me, and that’s okay.”
Altman, for his part, has said he thought the actor “did look kind of cool” in the role, according to The Print. The CEO has not publicly responded to Garfield’s denial since the GQ interview went live.

Two Versions, One Sidewalk
The facts both men agree on are narrow but clear: “Artificial” filmed outside Altman’s San Francisco home, and the production was visible enough for Altman to notice it on his street. Everything after that depends on whose memory you trust. Garfield says he was told Altman was not home and saw only one security guard. Altman says he was home, walked to get coffee, and waved at the man playing him. The OpenAI CEO has not offered a response to Garfield’s suggestion that he mistook someone else for the actor. The film arrives in theaters with the disagreement still unresolved, and the wave remains a matter of one man’s recollection against another’s flat denial.
