Angelina Jolie is back in the director’s chair with her latest film Without Blood, and many people believe the movie is a personal reflection of her own journey of healing after her painful split from Brad Pitt. The Oscar-winning actress and filmmaker has been opening up about trauma, healing, and finding her strength again while promoting the project. Her words have led to renewed speculation that the film’s themes are closely tied to her own experiences following the end of her marriage.

The 51-year-old star wrote and directed Without Blood, a war drama starring Salma Hayek and Demian Bichir. The film is adapted from Alessandro Baricco’s novel of the same name. Jolie has described the movie as a story meant for “people who seek answers and healing from their trauma”. These comments have naturally drawn attention to her highly publicized divorce and the legal battles that followed.

A Story About Surviving Trauma and Searching for Answers

Without Blood is set in the aftermath of an unnamed conflict and explores themes of war, memory, trauma, and reconciliation. Jolie has explained why she felt connected to the source material. She told People magazine, “I was drawn to Alessandro Baricco’s beautifully written novel because it examines universal truths about conflict, memory and what it is to be human”. She added, “I chose to stay very true to it. My approach was to shape and edit more than to write”.

When asked about who she believes will connect with the film, Jolie said, “The film is for anyone who seeks answers and healing after trauma. The book discusses how we often ‘return to where we break.’ That’s true for almost anyone. No one knows what someone else has gone through. To sit and talk with openness and honesty, is a beginning”.

These words have struck a chord with many who follow her life closely. A source familiar with Jolie’s work told Radar Online, “Angelina hasn’t explicitly said this film is about Brad, but when she talks about trauma, healing and returning to the place where you broke, it is impossible for people close to the situation not to see parallels with what she has lived through”.

The source continued, “She is basically dropping a huge hint it is about her healing after her split from Brad. Her experiences have inevitably shaped the person and filmmaker she is today”.

Release Date and Distribution Details

Without Blood has secured a U.S. theatrical release. Brainstorm Media acquired the distribution rights, and the film will hit theaters across the United States on September 18, 2026. The movie previously premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2024.

The film is produced by Jolie alongside Lorenzo Mieli, Lorenzo De Maio, and Simone Gattoni. It is a co-production between Fremantle North America and The Apartment, a Fremantle company, in collaboration with Jolie Productions and De Maio Entertainment.

Brainstorm Media’s chief executive Michelle Shwarzstein praised the film, saying, “Angelina Jolie has crafted, through a revenge western lens, a nuanced and unflinching acknowledgement of the human cost of war”. She added, “Anchored by two brilliant performances by Salma Hayek Pinault and Demián Bichir, this cinematic plea for empathy and understanding has unfortunately never been more relevant today”.

Salma Hayek Praises Jolie’s Direction

Salma Hayek, who stars in the film, has spoken highly of working with Jolie. She said, “Having the opportunity to be directed by Angelina Jolie in Without Blood was a profoundly enriching experience”. Hayek added, “Her emotional intelligence and searing sensitivity bring to life a story about how the wounds we carry shape who we become, and the strength it takes to carry on”.

Jolie also praised Hayek’s performance, saying, “It’s a very challenging piece for actors who had to be very brave and emotionally open. Knowing her well helped to direct her but there was so much about her as a woman and a performer I was surprised by still and so impressed”.

Jolie’s Personal Journey Reflected in Couture as Well

Jolie’s personal healing journey has also been reflected in another of her recent projects, Couture. In that film, she plays Maxine, a low-budget horror movie director juggling a fashion film commission and single motherhood during a divorce, while also receiving a breast cancer diagnosis.

Writer-director Alice Winocour said she wrote the film with Jolie in mind, explaining, “I needed someone special, someone that would have a special connection with the story. Angelina has a lot in common with the character. She’s also a director and she has been through this – not cancer but everyone knows her story”.

In an interview with Variety, Jolie opened up about her personal struggles, saying, “I think my fighting spirit is finally back. I lost it for a bit. I got kind of taken down a little bit and it’s coming back in large part thanks to my children, who are now older, and encouraging it”.

She also made a rare admission about her love life, telling Yahoo Entertainment, “To be candid, I haven’t dated since I divorced a decade ago”. She added, “Life has broken me a little”. The actress has credited her children for helping her recover and regain her strength.

The Long Road After the Split

Jolie and Pitt separated in 2016 after being together for 12 years and married for two. Their breakup led to a lengthy series of legal disputes, including a battle over their French winery, Château Miraval. The former couple share six children: Maddox Jolie-Pitt, 25, Pax Jolie-Pitt, 22, Zahara Jolie, 21, Shiloh Jolie, 20, and twins Knox Jolie-Pitt and Vivienne Jolie, both 18.

While Jolie has not directly linked Without Blood to her relationship with Pitt, the film’s focus on surviving difficult experiences and searching for answers has led many to see parallels with the challenges she has faced. As one source put it, “Her new film is a story about surviving trauma and searching for answers, so there is naturally going to be speculation that some of Angelina’s own healing is reflected in it”.
