The Oscar-winning actress recently shared a hiring story that has gone viral, revealing how she was spammed with identical ChatGPT-written thank-you notes from every candidate she interviewed for a role.
The Devil Wears Prada star recalled the experience during an interview on the Hits Radio Breakfast Show. The conversation took a turn when Hathaway explained that she had been in the process of hiring for a position. All the candidates were very nice, and they all sent her thank-you notes. That was when the problem became clear. Every single note was written by AI.
How did she figure it out? They were all exactly the same. The first note seemed nice and professional, but the second one landed in her inbox word-for-word identical to the first. Hathaway knew something was wrong. She warned job seekers that they might think they are getting away with something, but there is a good chance they are actually revealing themselves.

Meryl Streep, who was also part of the interview, did not hold back her thoughts on the matter. She rolled her eyes and called the situation “absolutely tragic.” Streep pointed out that there are so many potential employers out there, and a few minutes of personal effort can make all the difference.
“Oh my god, that would be an absolute killer. Nobody on that list gets that job. That’s just tragic, in my opinion.”
Streep added that the lack of effort does not go unnoticed, especially when it is a rare opportunity. The AI-written notes showed the candidates were not truly invested in the role.
The Thank-You Note Is a Secret Weapon
The thank-you note is supposed to help candidates stand out, but using AI can turn it into a downfall. In a difficult job market, where young people are applying to hundreds of positions, the pressure to automate is understandable. For many, an AI-written note is not laziness, but a way to manage a system that experts are calling a “hiring nightmare.”
However, the problem is that when everyone uses the same tools and prompts, the notes all sound alike. This does not help candidates stand out. It actually makes them look less interested in the job. The extra bit of effort it takes to write a personal note is an easy way to win, especially since they are becoming rare.
“It really takes two seconds, and clearly โฆ people aren’t sending them, so you will stand out if you send a thank-you to your interviewer after you get off the call,” said Sophie Rocha, a Gen Z hiring manager for the careers platform Home From College.
