The first trailer for Avatar: Fire and Ash has revealed the Tlalim Clan, also called the Wind Traders, a peaceful nomadic tribe living in Pandora’s skies. This new Na’vi group travels on giant jellyfish-like creatures called Medusoids and trades goods across the planet. The film, releasing on December 19, 2025, will explore their culture alongside the fiery Ash People, creating a stark contrast in Na’vi societies.
Director James Cameron describes the Wind Traders as Pandora’s version of ancient Earth’s spice road traders, emphasizing their role in connecting different clans. Played by David Thewlis, their leader Peylak brings a colorful, upbeat energy to the story. Meanwhile, the Ash People, led by Varang (Oona Chaplin), reject Eywa and embrace violence, setting up a major conflict.
Who Are the Wind Traders?
The Tlalim Clan is a group of sky nomads who travel across Pandora using floating creatures like Medusoids and Windrays. These massive jellyfish-like beings produce hydrogen gas to stay airborne, while Windrays act like tugboats to guide them. The Wind Traders trade goods between Na’vi clans, using sätare beads as currency.
“They’re nomadic traders, equivalent to the camel caravans of the Spice Road back in the Middle Ages,” James Cameron told Empire magazine. “They live in symbiosis with their creatures.”
Their vibrant, circus-like arrival in the film brings a sense of joy, contrasting with the darker themes of war and grief. Costume designer Deborah L. Scott crafted Peylak’s sunset-colored cloak to reflect their cheerful culture.
How Do They Fit Into the Story?
The Wind Traders provide balance to the escalating conflict with the Ash People, who have abandoned Eywa after a volcanic disaster destroyed their homeland. While the Ash People seek revenge, the Wind Traders represent harmony and trade.
The trailer shows breathtaking scenes of the Tlalim Clan gliding through Pandora’s skies, highlighting their freedom-loving nature. Their role may involve aiding Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) against the Ash People and Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who allies with Varang.
Connections to Previous Avatar Media
Fans have already glimpsed the Wind Traders in the Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora video game, where a character named Kukulope appears as a trader. The Windtraders gift shop at Disney’s Pandora: The World of Avatar theme park also hints at their importance.
The third Avatar film will be the longest in the series, running over three hours. It shifts focus to Lo’ak (Britain Dalton) as the narrator, exploring his grief after his brother Neteyam’s death. The story also follows Jake’s capture by humans and Neytiri’s struggle with rage.
With two new Na’vi clans, high-stakes battles, and deeper character arcs, Avatar: Fire and Ash promises to expand Pandora’s world like never before.
