The return of Euphoria for its third season carries a deep emotional weight. The show’s creator, Sam Levinson, recently shared intimate details about working with actor Eric Dane during his final days on set. Dane, who played the troubled Cal Jacobs, passed away on February 19, 2026, after a 10-month fight with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis). He was 53 years old.
Despite his diagnosis, Dane was determined to finish his story. He returned to film the final season in April 2025, right after telling the world about his illness. Levinson recently spoke at the Season 3 premiere in Los Angeles and in interviews about how the show adjusted to give the actor a proper send-off.
How the Show Rewrote Cal Jacobs’ Arc for Dane
Levinson knew the situation was serious when Dane called him before filming began. The actor admitted he was worried about how fast his body was changing. Specifically, the ALS was affecting his speech, causing it to become slurred.
Instead of hiding the symptom, Levinson decided to use it to help the character.
“When he showed up, I noticed that his speech was a little slurred. He was a bit self-conscious, and I said, ‘This works perfectly. We’re gonna put five beer bottles in front of you, and you’re about to say all the s–t you would never say if you were sober.’ And we just had a blast shooting.”

Levinson told Extra that he promised Dane, “Whatever shape you show up in, we’re gonna make it work.” For Levinson, working with Dane during this time was a gift. He noted that Dane showed up with “grace and dignity,” even during large scenes, like a wedding sequence involving Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi’s characters, where nearly 28 cast members were present.

What to Expect from Cal Jacobs in the Final Episodes
Fans got their first look at Dane’s final performance when the trailer dropped on March 30, 2026. The trailer features a powerful moment between Cal Jacobs and Hunter Schafer’s character, Jules.
“Remember me?” Jules asks.
“How could I forget?” Cal replies.
This scene calls back to their encounter in the first season. Before his death, Dane had hinted that Season 3 would bring his character a “moment of truth and some sort of redemption.” The final season, which premieres on April 12, picks up with the characters entering adulthood. Cal’s past actions finally catch up with him, forcing a confrontation that the show has been building toward for years.
Remembering Angus Cloud and the Season 3 Premiere
The Euphoria family has faced two devastating losses. Besides Eric Dane, the show lost Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, in 2023 at the age of 25. At the Los Angeles premiere on April 7, Levinson gave a five-minute speech honoring both actors, as well as producer Kevin Turen.
Levinson decided to keep Angus Cloud’s character alive in the show as a way to honor him.
“I couldn’t keep him alive in real life, but I could keep his character alive in the show. The character has got a great arc. I think he’d be very proud of it.”
— Sam Levinson to The Hollywood Reporter
The Season 3 premiere was a star-studded event at the TCL Chinese Theatre. Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, and Hunter Schafer walked the red carpet alongside new guest stars like Sharon Stone and Rosalía.
Eric Dane’s final words to his daughters, Billie and Georgia, were shared posthumously: “I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall, we had a blast, didn’t we?”
