A fresh leak about the ending of Avengers: Doomsday has set the Marvel fandom alight, and the consensus among fans is unusually unified: Doctor Strange will betray Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

The rumor, which surfaced on X in late October 2026, claims that the film concludes with one of the heroes siding with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom, handing the villain his victory and setting the stage for Avengers: Secret Wars. The film opens internationally on December 17, 2026, and domestically on December 18, 2026.

The speculation is not random. It traces directly to a persistent leak about a mysterious sorcerer known only as “Boris,” who appears among Doom’s henchmen in the film. Multiple accounts have claimed that “Boris” is none other than Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange, operating under an alias while serving the Latverian dictator.

The “Boris” Leak and the Secret Wars Precedent

The case for Strange’s turn begins with the source material. In Jonathan Hickman’s 2015 Secret Wars comic run, Doctor Doom steals the power of the Beyonders, creates the patchwork planet Battleworld, and installs himself as God Emperor. Stephen Strange, fully aware of the reality that existed before, chooses to serve as Doom’s right hand—not out of mind control, but out of a calculated recognition that resistance is futile.

That comic precedent is the strongest piece of evidence fans are citing. The MCU has already signaled that Doomsday will follow the Infinity War playbook: the villain wins the first chapter, and the heroes regroup in the second. If Doom is to rewrite reality and create Battleworld, he needs an architect at his side who understands the multiverse’s original blueprint. Strange fits that role precisely.

Leaks have further claimed that Strange survives the film’s final battle by retreating into the Dark Dimension, where time and space do not exist. From there, he allies with Doom, recognizing that Victor has reshaped reality to his liking and is now perceived as a god. The same leak suggests Strange will eventually devise a plan to betray Doom in Secret Wars by restoring the consciousness of heroes including Reed Richards, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Sam Wilson’s Captain America.

Why Fans Are Ruling Out Steve Rogers

Chris Evans’ return as Steve Rogers has generated its own betrayal theories, most of them rooted in the “HydraCap” comic storyline. The idea is that the Steve Rogers appearing in Doomsday is either an impostor or a corrupted variant, not the man who wielded Mjolnir in Endgame.

But industry insider Alex Perez of The Cosmic Circus publicly shut down that line of thinking in December 2025. When a fan asked whether Rogers would be the traitor, Perez replied: “Wrong traitor.” His comment confirmed that a betrayal exists while explicitly eliminating Captain America as the culprit.

The Doomsday trailer also undercuts the HydraCap theory by showing Evans’ Steve lifting Mjolnir—a deliberate reassurance that this is the genuine article. That leaves Strange as the most prominent hero with both the narrative motive and the comic-book pedigree to turn.

The Scarlet Witch and Namor: The Other Candidates

Strange is not the only name in circulation. Wanda Maximoff has been floated as a potential aide to Doom, fueled by the reveal of three “Latverian Witches” costumes displayed in Doomsday marketing materials—masked figures positioned behind Doom in a recent poster. Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch was last seen in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, where her fate was left ambiguous. Reshoots reportedly wrapped in late 2026 with sequences involving Olsen, Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm, and other characters, giving the Wanda theory fresh fuel.

Namor is another contender. In the comics, Tenoch Huerta’s Sub-Mariner is one of Doctor Doom’s most frequent collaborators, bound by a shared animosity toward the Fantastic Four. Doomsday will bring Namor back into the fold alongside the Fantastic Four, Wakanda, and the Avengers, creating the exact conditions for a quiet alliance with Doom.

Still, neither Wanda nor Namor carries the same narrative weight as Strange. The Sorcerer Supreme has been the MCU’s designated keeper of multiversal secrets since Infinity War, when he peered into 14,000,605 futures and told Tony Stark there was only one path to victory. A VisionQuest episode later confirmed that Strange did not lie to Tony about that outcome, clearing his name of one long-running fan accusation. But the revelation also opened the door to a darker reading: if Strange knew the cost of victory and accepted it, he may be equally willing to accept Doom’s new order.

What a Doom Victory Means for the MCU

The reported ending of Doomsday is bleak by Marvel standards. According to the most widely circulated leak, the final battle of Latveria 828 ends in an incursion between Earth-616 and Earth-10005 that kills every hero present—Reed Richards, Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man, Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, and the rest. Only Doom survives, having extracted power from Loki.

Doom then uses that power to build Battleworld, an artificial planet stitched together from fragments of destroyed universes. Each region is a piece of a different reality, and Doom rules as its emperor. The survivors—including Strange—are resurrected within this new order, their memories altered to accept it as reality.

That structure is a direct adaptation of the 2015 Secret Wars event, which Marvel Studios has been building toward since it announced Downey’s casting as Doom in July 2024. The two-film strategy mirrors Infinity War and Endgame: the first movie ends in defeat, the second in reversal. Secret Wars is scheduled for December 17, 2027.

For Strange, the betrayal is not necessarily a heel turn. In the comics, his service to Doom is pragmatic—a recognition that fighting a god is futile, and that the only path to restoring the multiverse runs through compliance. If the MCU follows that logic, Strange’s “betrayal” in Doomsday may be the first move in a longer con, one that pays off when he restores the heroes’ consciousness in Secret Wars and leads the uprising against Doom.

The Russo Brothers Are Keeping Quiet

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have taken extraordinary measures to prevent leaks. Production moved onto soundstages specifically to stop unauthorized photography, with Joe Russo telling Collider: “We don’t want people getting photographs, so we are being pretty stringent.” The studio has also declined to confirm or deny any of the plot rumors, leaving the “Boris” leak and the Strange betrayal theory in the realm of unverified speculation.

Marvel’s official cast list confirms Cumberbatch’s involvement alongside Downey, Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Paul Rudd, Simu Liu, Tom Hiddleston, and a returning X-Men contingent including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, and James Marsden. The size of the ensemble makes the question of who stands with Doom—and who stands against him—the film’s central dramatic tension.
