The long wait for Euphoria Season 3 is finally over. The show returned to HBO on April 12, 2026, bringing back most of its main cast. But one familiar face is missing. Barbie Ferreira, who played Kat Hernandez in the first two seasons, did not return. While rumors about drama and fights with show creator Sam Levinson spread online for years, Ferreira is now setting the record straight. She says her decision to leave was not a big fight. It was a simple choice about her career and feeling like her character had nowhere left to go.
“It Was Kind of the Opposite of Dramatic”
Ferreira opened up about her exit on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. She wanted to clear up the gossip once and for all. According to Ferreira, there was no explosion or fight on set. Instead, it was a long and quiet process of realizing that Kat was not moving forward.
“It wasn’t dramatic. In fact, it was kind of the opposite of dramatic where it was a long process of being like, ‘I don’t know if this is it for me’ and then having conversations with people and us trying to figure out how to make Kat like a fully fleshed-out character and it just wasn’t going anywhere.”
She explained that she and the show’s team sat down to find a path for Kat. After a lot of talks, they simply could not find a good direction. Rather than force a story they did not believe in, Ferreira decided it was time to walk away.
“Since we can’t find anything and we can’t land on anything, I’m like, ‘Let me just go. Let me just go do my thing.’”
Why She Chose Indie Films Over the Biggest Show on TV
Euphoria is one of the most popular shows in the world. For many actors, staying on such a hit series would be the top priority. But Ferreira had different goals. She told the podcast that she does not need to be on “the biggest TV show on Earth” if she is not actually acting.
During the second season, Ferreira felt her role was getting smaller. She did not want to become a background character while other stories took the lead. She wanted to work on projects where she could actually perform and grow.
“I would rather do an indie movie where I’m acting, I’m flexing my muscles, I’m being creatively asked to do things rather than kind of sitting around to be like a background character.”
She shared that some people might be happy to take a small role on a big show for nine months. But for her, that was not enough. She wants to produce and act in indie films that tell real stories, even if the budgets are very small.
Setting the Record Straight on the Sam Levinson Rumors
For a long time, fans believed that Ferreira left because she had a big fight with Sam Levinson. Some reports even claimed she walked off the set. Ferreira strongly denied these rumors. She said the choice to leave was a team decision.
“It was absolutely not just me. Everyone decided that … there was nowhere to go.”
She admitted that Season 2 was a struggle for both her and Levinson. It was hard to find a continuation for Kat. Watching fans get upset about her character’s smaller role was hurtful. But she never blamed the creator for pushing her out.
Ferreira noted that Levinson writes stories that he personally relates to. She does not think he related to Kat as a character. Instead of letting the character fade away into nothing, she chose to leave while fans still remembered her fondly.
No Hard Feelings and Staying in Touch with the Cast
Even though she is no longer on the show, Ferreira holds no bad feelings. She still keeps in touch with many of her former co-stars. Hunter Schafer, Maude Apatow, and Sydney Sweeney all came to support her during her Broadway run in Cult of Love.
When asked if she will watch Euphoria Season 3, Ferreira said yes without any hesitation. She is excited to see what her friends do with their characters.
“They look amazing. I’m excited to see what the girls are gonna do.”
However, she admitted that the old cast group chat did not survive the four-year break between seasons. She is not in the loop on the current behind-the-scenes gossip.
The Other Stars Missing from Season 3
Ferreira is not the only original cast member missing from the new season. Storm Reid (Gia Bennett) also did not return. Reid said it was simply a scheduling issue. She is busy finishing her degree at USC.
Austin Abrams (Ethan Lewis) and Algee Smith (Chris McKay) are also absent. Ethan’s story was closely tied to Kat’s, so his exit makes sense with Ferreira’s departure. Javon Walton (Ashtray) is gone as well, following the passing of his on-screen brother, Angus Cloud.
