Sony Pictures is developing a sequel to the 1997 hit romantic comedy My Best Friend’s Wedding, with Celine Song—known for Past Lives and Materialists—set to write the screenplay. The project is in early stages, and while Song is not confirmed to direct, her involvement brings fresh energy to the beloved Julia Roberts film. Original star Dermot Mulroney recently hinted at the sequel, saying, “I know nothing about it. Last I heard, quote, lawyers were talking, unquote.”

The original film, directed by P.J. Hogan, followed food critic Julianne Potter (Roberts) as she tried to stop her best friend Michael (Mulroney) from marrying another woman (Cameron Diaz). It became a box office success, earning $127 million domestically and ranking among the top films of 1997.

Why Celine Song Is a Strong Choice

Song gained acclaim for her Oscar-nominated debut Past Lives, a romantic drama about childhood friends reconnecting. Her follow-up, Materialists, starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal, earned $50 million globally. Her ability to blend emotional depth with humor makes her a fitting writer for the sequel.

“While the plot line has some unsettling pitfalls, this contemporary comedy sparkles with some shrewd insights into the pitfalls of women who are too sophisticated for their own good,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter about the original film.

Will the Original Cast Return?

No official casting announcements have been made, but Julia Roberts has previously expressed interest in revisiting her character. In a 2023 interview, she said:

“Because there’s so many people in it, and to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going.”

Mulroney’s recent comments suggest discussions are happening, but nothing is confirmed. Fans hope for returns from Roberts, Mulroney, Diaz, and Rupert Everett, who played Julianne’s flamboyant friend George.

The Legacy of the Original Film

My Best Friend’s Wedding was groundbreaking for its time, offering an unconventional rom-com ending where the lead doesn’t get the guy. It earned three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Comedy/Musical, and remains a fan favorite. In 2022, Variety named it one of the 100 greatest movies of all time.

The sequel joins a wave of 1990s revivals, including Happy Gilmore 2 and Freakier Friday. With Song’s talent for heartfelt storytelling, the follow-up could bring a modern twist while honoring the original’s charm.
