What Happens in “Dark Imaginings”

The episode opens with Burgess in bed at the new house she shares with Adam Ruzek and her daughter Mack. A dripping sound keeps her awake. She checks every drain but cannot find the source. The noise has been bothering her since they moved in, and it becomes a running symbol of her unease.

Morning brings a small moment of normalcy. Ruzek reassures her that the house will feel like home eventually. Mack is doing well and has made friends at school. Burgess heads out and catches a call on her way to the precinct. A fleeing driver crashes into a parked car and dies. Burgess finds a stack of cash and drugs in the back seat. The drugs carry a firecracker logo that links to a violent drug trafficking organization leader named Jared Munson. Narcotics has been chasing Munson for years without success.

Burgess pitches an undercover plan. She will pose as someone who found the cash and drugs and wants to return them for a finder’s fee. Voight approves. The team knows Burgess could be undercover for a long stretch. Ruzek is not happy that she will miss the block party, which was supposed to be their chance to meet the neighbors. Burgess suggests the undercover job might actually help her find that “happy to be home” feeling.

The Undercover Mission: From a Car Crash to a Drug Kingpin

Burgess approaches one of Munson’s runners with a photo of the cash and drugs. She asks him to pass a message to Munson. The runner does not call right away. Burgess settles into her undercover apartment and finds it surprisingly easier to relax there than in her own new home. A text from Munson arrives with a meetup time and location.

At the meeting spot, Munson sends his girlfriend instead of coming himself. The girlfriend takes Burgess to a bar where Munson is waiting. He questions her about why she did not keep the money. Burgess says she knows what happens to people who steal from him. Munson does not accept her deal. He offers his own: she will help him with a job and get a cut.

The next day, Burgess and Munson’s girlfriend go to a drop-off location. A man named Iggy rushes up and holds them at gunpoint. Ruzek nearly moves in to provide backup, but Burgess handles the situation and Iggy runs off. Later that night, Burgess calls home to check in. Ruzek tells her the plumber found no leaks. After the call, Munson shows up at her undercover apartment. He says Iggy cannot be found and presses her for details about her past. He tells her to meet him at the bar in thirty minutes.

Burgess worries she may have been burned. She left both her undercover phone and her real phone out. She decides to stay undercover and goes to the bar. Munson is not there. Dee Dee greets her instead and gives her the drop-off information. Burgess takes the intel to the precinct. Watts finds a player on the board they could squeeze, but Voight does not want to chase it while Burgess is still in play.

Dee Dee’s Breakdown and the Bug Plant

Burgess comes up with a plan to plant a bug in the home of Munson’s cook. The plan requires stealing a key from Dee Dee’s place while Dee Dee is at beauty school. Burgess arrives at Dee Dee’s apartment and hears screaming inside. She rushes in to find Dee Dee in a manic state after catching Munson cheating on her. Burgess calms her down and looks for her phone to call Dee Dee’s sponsor. Dee Dee is already experiencing delusions from whatever she has taken. Burgess stays with her until she crashes. While Dee Dee sleeps, Burgess makes an imprint of the key.

Before leaving, Burgess asks Dee Dee not to leave town so she can help her. Back at the undercover apartment, Ruzek calls to check in. Burgess confirms the key is good and she is ready to plant the wire. Ruzek warns her that she needs to get out. Munson did a slow drive by their real house and saw Mack. Her cover is blown.

The Final Confrontation and a New Neighbor

Burgess finds Munson waiting outside her undercover apartment. He orders her into the car. She pulls her gun and announces herself as CPD. Munson gets the upper hand and turns the gun on her. He demands to know where Dee Dee has gone. Dee Dee took money from his safe and ran. Munson seems ready to shoot Burgess, but sirens scare him off. He pistol-whips her and escapes.

Watts arrives and the two pursue Munson. They find his car but no sign of him. Back at the precinct, the team tracks down Dee Dee and a friend named Tater. Both are already dead. Dee Dee managed to stab Munson before she died. Burgess and Watts follow a blood trail to a nearby parked car. The unit searches boxing gyms where Munson might be hiding. At one gym, Munson bursts through a door with a gun. Burgess fires several shots and kills him.

The job is done, but Burgess cannot shake the guilt of being made. Voight suggests Munson may have been onto her from the start. He was smart enough to run her undercover car and track down the rental place the team uses. Voight sends Burgess home. She joins Ruzek and Mack at the block party.

At the party, Burgess meets Wayne, a neighbor who lives two doors down. Wayne apologizes for ignoring her the day before when she waved. He was on two calls. He says the street just got safer with them moving in. Something about Wayne feels off. Burgess rejoins Ruzek and tells him she feels more settled. The episode ends with Burgess lying awake in bed again, the dripping sound still there, her struggle clearly not over.

Burgess and Ruzek’s New House: A Backstory of Unease

The new house has been a point of tension since the season began. Marina Squerciati spoke about the move in an interview ahead of the episode. “Burzek has moved to a different house and a new neighborhood. They’ve been in the same crumbling down house for a while,” she said.

The dripping sound is not just a creepy detail. It represents Burgess’s inability to feel at home in her own life. She can settle into a fake apartment for an undercover job more easily than she can settle into the house she chose with her family. The episode uses this contrast to show that her unease is not about the house itself. It is about everything the house represents: stability, family, and a future she is not sure she is ready for.

Mack is thriving in the new environment, which makes Burgess’s struggle more noticeable. Ruzek is doing his best to hold things together. He reassures Burgess, takes care of Mack, and worries about her safety during the undercover operation. The block party was supposed to be their official start in the neighborhood. Burgess misses it because of work, and when she finally arrives, she meets a neighbor who gives her a bad feeling.

The Meaning Behind “Dark Imaginings”

The episode title comes from Max Ehrmann’s poem Desiderata. The line “Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune” is echoed in Burgess’s journey. She faces sudden misfortune on the job and at home. The “dark imaginings” are the thoughts that keep her awake at night, the feeling that something is wrong even when everything looks fine on the surface.

The title also connects to Dee Dee’s delusions and the paranoia that runs through the undercover operation. Burgess has to imagine what Munson is thinking, what Dee Dee is feeling, and what Wayne might be hiding. The episode leaves the audience with the same question Burgess has: is the danger really over, or is it just beginning?

Cast and Production Details

Marina Squerciati leads the episode as Detective Kim Burgess. Patrick John Flueger plays Adam Ruzek. Jason Beghe appears as Sergeant Hank Voight. The ensemble also includes Benjamin Levy Aguilar as Dante Torres, Arienne Mandi as Eva Imani, and Amy Morton as Sergeant Trudy Platt.

“Dark Imaginings” is the fifth episode of Season 14 and the 269th episode of Chicago P.D. overall. The episode runs for 42 minutes. It aired on NBC and streams on Peacock starting Thursday, November 5, 2026.

What Happened Before Episode 5

Season 14 opened with Officer Imani confronting the fallout of rescuing her sister Shari from a lifelong trafficking situation. Episode 1 also featured a case involving a corrupt parole officer who committed murder to silence victims.

Episode 2, titled “Don’t Blink,” was Kevin Atwater’s final episode. Atwater welcomed a baby son with Tasha Fox, got shot during a pursuit, and decided to move his family to Atlanta. Voight gave him his blessing. The Intelligence Unit gathered at Molly’s for a goodbye party.

Episode 3, “Under the Surface,” followed a homicide investigation after a tip led the team to bodies in the river. The case connected to a local pimp and dealer named Rob “B Rock.” Voight discovered a larger conspiracy after his C.I. was shot and killed. The episode also introduced FBI Agent Charlie, who is auditing the 21st District’s finances.

Episode 4 introduced Donovan Watts as Atwater’s replacement. The episode focused on the new team dynamic and set up the Burgess-centered story in Episode 5.

Final Moments and the Neighbor Named Wayne

The block party scene is brief but loaded. Wayne’s apology sounds polite on the surface. His comment that the street “just got safer” with Burgess and Ruzek moving in is meant to be friendly. The show frames it as unsettling. Burgess’s instincts are already heightened from the undercover operation. Wayne triggers something in her. The episode does not explain what is wrong with Wayne. It simply leaves the question hanging.
