The first teaser for Clayface has arrived, and it is not what most people expected from a superhero movie. James Gunn and DC Studios took a sharp turn into horror with this project. The teaser, released on April 22, shows the tragic fall of a Hollywood actor turning into a clay monster. This is the first time DC is making a full body-horror film, and the internet is already talking about it.

A Dark New Direction for the DC Universe

The Clayface teaser opens with Tom Rhys Harries lying in a hospital bed. His character, Matt Hagen, is covered in bandages and blood. The trailer then shows quick cuts of his face changing and melting like soft clay. There is almost no dialogue in the whole teaser. Only horror sounds and a creepy song play in the background.

This is a big change from other DC movies like Superman or Peacemaker. James Gunn had earlier said there were no plans to make a Clayface movie. But when Mike Flanagan (the director of Doctor Sleep and The Haunting of Hill House) turned in a script, everything changed. Gunn called it “one of the best scripts that we’ve read.”

The teaser does not show much of the story. But the official synopsis explains that Matt Hagen is a rising Hollywood star. After a gangster disfigures his face, he goes to a scientist played by Naomi Ackie. The scientist tries to help him but instead turns his whole body into living clay.

Who Is Behind the Clayface Movie

James Watkins is the director of this film. He made the 2024 remake of Speak No Evil and the horror movie The Woman in Black. Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini wrote the script together. The producing team is also very strong. Matt Reeves (who directed The Batman), James Gunn, and Peter Safran are all producers on this project.

The cast includes more than just Tom Rhys Harries. Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, and David Dencik are also part of the film. Nancy Carroll and Joshua James round out the cast.

Peter Safran, co-chief of DC Studios, said that Clayface might not be as famous as The Joker or The Penguin. But he believes his story is just as powerful and even more terrifying.

Fan Reactions to the Horror-Themed Trailer

Social media exploded with reactions right after the teaser dropped. Many fans praised DC for trying something completely new.

One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote:

“I am so glad that they are going full shape-shifting clay monster, and not doing the typical live-action thing of only just giving him a malleable face.”

Another fan loved the horror approach and said:

“No Dialogue, Only Horror Sounds, and a faint eerie song playing in the background, THIS is what a horror teaser should be like. Peak Cinema.”

Some fans pointed out that this version of Clayface takes inspiration from Batman: The Animated Series from the 1990s. That show had a famous episode about Clayface that many fans still remember today.

One user wrote about the bathtub scene in the teaser:

“That shot in the bathtubโ€ฆ if that doesnt sum up the whole tradgey of Clayfaces character.”

Many fans also showed confidence because Mike Flanagan wrote the script. One person said:

“The fact that Mike Flanagan wrote this film and adapted the Matt Hagen storyline from Batman TAS has me really excited.”

There was even a fan who directed a comment at Marvel, writing “Your move, Marvel!” This shows that fans see this dark, horror-driven project as something new and exciting for comic book movies.

What Makes This Clayface Different

Clayface first appeared in Detective Comics #40 back in June 1940. The character has shown up in many TV shows like Gotham, Pennyworth, and Birds of Prey. He has also been in many animated series over the years.

But this live-action version is different. Earlier versions often showed Clayface as just a villain with a clay body. This new movie will show his full transformation in graphic detail. James Gunn described the film as “true and psychological and body horror and gross.”

The movie will carry an R rating. This is not a family-friendly superhero film. The story focuses on the loss of identity, the loss of humanity, and the dark side of scientific ambition.

Release Date and Where to Watch

Clayface will release in theaters on October 23, 2026 in North America. International audiences will get to see it starting October 21, 2026. The film will also be available in IMAX.

This release date is perfect for a horror movie. October is the month of Halloween, and DC is clearly using this to their advantage. The film comes after Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which releases on June 26, 2026.

Warner Bros. Pictures will distribute the movie. It is a DC Studios presentation in association with Domain Entertainment and a 6th & Idaho Production.

A Risky but Exciting Move for DC

DC is trying something that no major comic book studio has done before. They are making a full horror movie set inside their main superhero universe. This is not a separate project like Joker. This Clayface exists in the same world as Superman and Supergirl.

James Gunn explained the studio’s thinking behind this choice:

“Weve got Clayface, which is a totally different thing. Although its in the same universe, its a complete horror film. Thats one of the things we want to do โ€“ there is not a company style. It is not like every movie is going to be like Superman. The artists โ€“ the directors and the writers โ€“ each one will bring their own sense to it.”

This approach could keep audiences from getting bored. Not every movie will look or feel the same. Clayface will be dark, scary, and disturbing. Superman will be brighter and more hopeful. Both exist in the same world.

The teaser has already done its job. People are talking about Clayface, sharing the trailer, and marking their calendars for October. For a character that many casual fans might not know well, this is a strong start.
