The DC Universe is doing something it has never done before. The upcoming movie Clayface is a full horror film. No superheroes saving the day here. Instead, viewers get the origin story of a shape-shifting monster from Gotham City.
On April 22, 2026, DC Studios dropped the first teaser trailer and official poster. The internet reacted strongly. Many fans called it scary and shocking. The footage shows actor Tom Rhys Harries transforming into a clay-like creature. His face melts, stretches, and changes shape. It looks painful and disturbing. This is not the usual comic book movie.
First Look at Clayface Teaser Trailer and Poster
The teaser trailer runs just over a minute. It starts with Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries) lying in a hospital bed. His face is wrapped in bandages. He has a feeding tube. The mood is dark and sad. Then the trailer flashes between his life before and after the attack. He looks like a normal rising star at first. Handsome and full of hope.
Everything changes. The trailer shows his face physically breaking down. Skin turns into thick, wet clay. His features melt off his skull. One moment he looks human. The next, his face is a twisted mess of brown mud. The music is a slow, creepy version of The Flaming Lips song “Do You Realize??”
The official poster arrived on the same day. It shows a close-up of Clayface’s face. The skin is stretched and pulled. You can see the pain in his eyes. The tagline says “Look Fear In The Face.” The design promises a body horror experience. Think movies like The Fly or The Thing. This is not for young kids. The movie carries an expected R rating.
Clayface Storyline and Origin Explained
So who is Matt Hagen? And why does he turn into a monster? The movie explains the beginning of his nightmare. He is a struggling actor in Hollywood. He has talent. He has dreams. Then a violent attack changes everything. A gangster disfigures his face. He survives, but his acting career is over. His face is ruined.
Desperate and broken, he goes to a scientist for help. The scientist is played by Naomi Ackie. She offers an experimental treatment. The goal is to fix his face. The treatment works at first. His face heals. But then things go very wrong. The procedure turns his body into a living, breathing lump of clay. He can now shape-shift. He can look like anyone. But he loses himself in the process.
The official description from DC Studios says the movie is about “the loss of one’s identity and humanity, corrosive love, and the dark underbelly of scientific ambition.” Hagen becomes a “revenge-filled monster.” He used to be a victim. Now he is the threat. He uses his new powers to hunt those who hurt him. But he also becomes a danger to everyone around him.
Who Is in the Clayface Cast?
Tom Rhys Harries plays the lead role. You might know him from White Lines or The Return. This is his biggest movie part yet. He has to act through tons of makeup and special effects. The trailer shows he is giving a very physical performance.
The supporting cast includes several well-known names.
- Naomi Ackie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Mickey 17) plays the scientist who changes Hagen’s life. Her character’s exact name is not public yet. But she is the one who gives him the clay body.
- Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale) is also in the movie.
- Eddie Marsan (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) and David Dencik (No Time to Die) round out the main cast.
DC Studios co-chief James Gunn already shut down false rumors. Some fans thought Daniel Radcliffe would play the villain. Gunn said that was “100% false.” He explained they had not even started casting when those rumors spread. Alan Tudyk voices Clayface in the Harley Quinn cartoon. But he will not play the live-action version.
Who Is Making the Clayface Movie?
The team behind Clayface is impressive. The director is James Watkins. He knows horror well. He made The Woman in Black (2012) and Speak No Evil (2024). He also directed episodes of Black Mirror. Watkins knows how to build tension and scare audiences.
The script comes from Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Flanagan is a horror legend. He created The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass. He also directed Doctor Sleep. Gunn read Flanagan’s script and loved it. Gunn admitted DC had “no plans to make a Clayface movie.” But Flanagan’s script changed their minds. Gunn called it “one of the best scripts that we’ve read.”
The producers include James Gunn and Peter Safran (the bosses of DC Studios). Matt Reeves (director of The Batman) also produces. This shows DC is taking the project very seriously. They are giving it top talent.
Clayface Release Date and Streaming Details
Clayface will release in theaters on October 23, 2026. This is a perfect date for a horror movie. It comes right before Halloween.
The international release starts a little earlier. The movie will begin showing in other countries on October 21, 2026. It will play in regular theaters and IMAX. Warner Bros. Pictures is handling the distribution.
For viewers in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and India, the plan is the same. The movie will hit local cinemas in late October. Streaming details are not confirmed yet. Since this is a Warner Bros. movie, it will likely go to Max (formerly HBO Max) after its theater run. That usually happens 45 to 90 days after the opening. But for now, the only way to see it is on the big screen.
This release date is a small change from the original plan. DC first scheduled the movie for September 11, 2026. They pushed it back by about six weeks. Clayface will come out after Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which opens on June 26, 2026. Both movies are part of DC’s second wave of releases after Superman.

Why This Movie Is Different for DC
Superhero movies usually follow a pattern. The hero fights the bad guy. Good wins. Clayface is not that. This is a tragedy. The main character starts as a good person. Life breaks him. Science makes him worse. He becomes the monster.
DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran explained the thinking.
“Clayface might not be as widely known as The Penguin or The Joker, but his story is equally resonant, compelling, and in many ways, more terrifying.”
James Gunn added more details. He said the movie will feel “totally real.” He described it as “true and psychological and body horror and gross.” This is not a funny movie. It is not an action movie. It is a horror movie first. The fact that it takes place in Gotham City comes second.
This is a risk for DC. Horror movies cost less than giant superhero epics. They also make good money if they are good. Joker was a dark character study. It made over a billion dollars. Clayface could follow a similar path. It focuses on a broken person. It does not rely on big explosions or saving the world.
The character of Clayface first appeared in Detective Comics #40 in 1940. He was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Over the years, many people have worn the name. Some were criminals. Some were victims. The Matt Hagen version is the most famous one who can shape-shift. The movie takes the best parts of that history and makes it very scary.
