Colin Farrell has shared his thoughts on a potential second season for the hit HBO series The Penguin, revealing his personal doubts about it happening. Despite the show’s critical acclaim and numerous awards, the actor says he would “bet against” a new season, though he acknowledges that storylines are being explored.

The series, which was originally planned as a limited show, continues the story from Matt Reeves’ film The Batman. It follows Farrell’s character, Oswald “Oz” Cobb, as he tries to take control of Gotham City’s criminal underworld.

What Colin Farrell Said About a New Season

In a recent interview, Colin Farrell was direct about his feelings on The Penguin Season 2. The actor explained that he tends to have a negative outlook, which influences his view.

โ€œOh, I donโ€™t know. I have a bit of a, generally speaking, I have a bit of a negativity bias,โ€ Farrell told ComicBook. โ€œApparently, Iโ€™ve been told by various people close to me. So I would say I would bet against, but not by much.โ€

Despite his personal doubts, Farrell confirmed that discussions for more episodes are happening. He noted that the powers that be are actively thinking of storylines that could justify another eight-hour season.

How The Penguin Connects to The Batman Sequel

A key reason for the uncertainty around Season 2 is its close connection to the upcoming movie The Batman Part II. Farrell explained how the show perfectly filled a gap in the story.

โ€œIt conveniently worked that the death at the end of The Batman and the devastation within Gotham opened up a power vacuum that then Oz could try and capitalize on,โ€ he said. โ€œThat was perfect for the parallel eight hours that we had. And then [The Batman Part II] will pick up, whatever, a few weeks after the show ended.โ€

This timeline means that any new season would have to carefully fit into the narrative planned for the next Batman film, which is set to begin filming in the spring and will be released on October 1, 2027.

The Show’s Critical Success and Awards

The first season of The Penguin was a major success for HBO and DC Studios. The show received widespread praise from critics and audiences, earning an impressive 24 Emmy Award nominations.

Colin Farrell won a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his role as Oz Cobb, and his co-star Cristin Milioti, who played Sofia Falcone, won an Emmy for her performance. This level of recognition has fueled fan demand and industry speculation about the show’s future.

The Official Stance from Creators

Director Matt Reeves, who oversees this Batman universe, has also commented on the possibility of more seasons. In September, he said he would love to do more things in the Batman world but is currently focused on completing The Batman Part II.

Reeves indicated that serious talks about a second season of The Penguin would only resume once the sequel film is properly underway. This aligns with Farrell’s comments that the film is the current priority.

What This Means for Fans

For now, the future of The Penguin remains officially unconfirmed. While Farrell’s personal outlook is cautious, the active development of story ideas suggests the door is not completely closed. Fans will likely have to wait for more concrete news about the show’s future until after The Batman Part II moves further into production.

All episodes of the first season of The Penguin are available to stream on HBO Max.
