Dakota Johnson has been in the news recently after reports confirmed she and musician Role Model (real name Tucker Pillsbury) have broken up. The pair started dating in late 2025, but a source told People magazine that their relationship ended “a while ago”. This breakup comes just months after Johnson ended her nearly eight-year on-and-off relationship with Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in June 2025.
Before her romance with Role Model and her long-term relationship with Martin, the Fifty Shades of Grey actress had several other high-profile relationships. Let’s take a look at the men she dated before these recent chapters in her love life.
Noah Gersh: Her Childhood Sweetheart
Dakota Johnson’s first known serious relationship was with musician Noah Gersh. The two started dating when Johnson was around 16 or 17 years old. Gersh is a musician, and the couple reportedly dated for about four years in the early 2000s. Their relationship ended around 2012 as Johnson’s acting career began to take off. This was Johnson’s longest relationship before she met Chris Martin.
Jordan Masterson: A Two-Year Romance
After her split from Gersh, Johnson began dating actor Jordan Masterson in 2012. Masterson is the half-brother of actor Danny Masterson. The couple dated for about two years. Their relationship reportedly ended in 2014. Not much is known about their time together, as both kept their personal lives relatively private.
Matthew Hitt: An On-and-Off Connection
Following her breakup with Masterson, Johnson was linked to Welsh musician Matthew Hitt in July 2014. Hitt is the lead vocalist of the indie rock band Drowners. The pair had an on-and-off relationship that lasted for nearly two years. A source told E! News at the time that “Dakota and Matthew have dated on-and-off for the past two years”. Their relationship ended in 2016.
Chris Martin: The Nearly Eight-Year Relationship
Johnson’s most famous relationship before Role Model was with Chris Martin. The two were first linked in October 2017. They were seen having dinner at Sushi Park in Los Angeles, which sparked dating rumors. Their relationship was mostly kept out of the spotlight, with both rarely speaking about it publicly.
The couple had an on-and-off relationship that lasted until June 2025. During their time together, they were reportedly engaged for “years”. A source told Page Six that Johnson “was sick of him dragging his feet on setting a date for the wedding”. Another insider told The Sun that the age gap was often a problem, and Johnson had expressed that she might want children in the future, while Martin was “kind of done with that part of his life”.
In a 2021 interview with Elle UK, Johnson spoke about her relationship with Martin, saying, “We’ve been together for quite a while, and we go out sometimes, but we both work so much that it’s nice to be at home and be cozy and private”. She also collaborated with him in 2020 on the Coldplay music video for “Cry, Cry, Cry,” which she co-directed. The couple even had matching infinity symbol tattoos.
Role Model: The Post-Martin Romance
After her split from Martin, Johnson began dating Tucker Pillsbury, known professionally as Role Model, in late 2025. They were first spotted having dinner together in December 2025. A source told People in April 2026 that their relationship was “definitely more than a fling, or just a flirt” and that they had been dating “since late last year”.
The couple collaborated on a track from Pillsbury’s album Chuck Timely & the Hourglass. Johnson appears in a spoken-word moment on the song “Love I You”. In the track, the two exchange flirty lines. Pillsbury told Rolling Stone that Johnson’s “voice was perfect on it” and that her contribution made the song “really special to him”.
However, their relationship has now ended. A source told People that they split “a while ago”. The pair were last seen together in April 2026 during a night out in Los Angeles.
Before dating Johnson, Pillsbury was linked to influencer Emma Chamberlain from 2020 to 2023.
Dakota Johnson’s Take on Dating
In a 2025 interview with Elle UK, Johnson made an interesting comment about her dating life. She said, “I’ve never dated anybody. I’ve had boyfriends, but I have never been on a dating app”. She explained that the concept of dating apps is foreign to her. She also shared her thoughts on love, saying, “Loving someone is the most scary and beautiful thing you can do”.
When asked about her relationship non-negotiables on the Today show, she said, “Like, not an a–hole”.
