The hunt for a missing girl in Los Angeles took some dangerous turns in the latest episode of Dark Winds Season 4. Episode 5, titled “Atída’ahiilyaágíí (Those Who Harmed One Another),” aired on March 15, 2026, and brought the Navajo Tribal Police face-to-face with federal agents and violent criminals. The episode also left fans with a major cliffhanger involving Jim Chee.
This episode picks up right where the previous one ended. Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) wakes up beaten and tied up by two strangers, while Jim Chee (Kiowa Gordon) is still dealing with the effects of the drugs he was given. The search for Billie Tsosie and Leroy Gorman gets more complicated as the cases in Los Angeles and on the reservation start to connect. Here is a detailed recap of everything that happened in Dark Winds Season 4 Episode 5 and when you can watch the next episode.
Joe Leaphorn’s Brutal Awakening and a Reluctant Alliance with the FBI
The episode starts with Joe Leaphorn waking up inside a box truck. Two white men are interrogating him. They found his badge and want to know why a tribal cop is in Los Angeles. Leaphorn tries to stick to his story about sightseeing, but the men beat him until he admits he is looking for his niece Billie and nephew Leroy, who were at a party thrown by a man named McNair. The men finally dump him on the side of the road and warn him to leave town before someone kills him.
Leaphorn ends up in the hospital with cracked ribs. His wife Emma (Deanna Allison) is working there now. She patches him up while Bernadette Manuelito (Jessica Matten) and a still-groggy Chee wait for him. Emma tells Joe she is happy in the city. For the first time in 30 years, she says she is not constantly worried about him dying on the job.
Joe explains to Bern and Chee that the men who attacked him might be FBI agents. Chee, who used to work for the FBI, decides they should visit the federal office. There, they meet Agent Toby Shaw (Luke Barnett) and Agent Frank Wells. Shaw is the man who beat Joe, and he awkwardly apologizes for the mix-up.
The agents reveal they are building a case against McNair, who runs an import/export business that is a front for criminal activity. The problem is that key witnesses keep disappearing or dying. Joe tells them that their witness, Albert Gorman, was murdered on the reservation three days ago by a German woman in a green van. The FBI refuses to share information at first, but Bernadette pleads with them, saying Billie will die if they do not help. Despite her warning, the agents hold back, and the tribal officers leave frustrated.
Chee Returns to His Undercover Role as Mike Garcia
With the FBI unwilling to cooperate fully, Jim Chee goes back undercover as Mike Garcia to get closer to the gangster Sonny (Chaske Spencer) . Sonny is suspicious and immediately questions Chee about the woman from the party. Chee plays dumb, pretending he was too messed up to remember anything.
Sonny takes Chee on a drive across the city to handle business. At one point, an older Navajo woman recognizes Chee and speaks to him in Diné. She remembers him and his mother, which visibly disturbs Chee. This moment hints at a painful past in Los Angeles that Chee has been running from.
Meanwhile, Agent Shaw has a change of heart. He shows up at Joe and Bern’s motel to talk about the German in the green van. He reveals that a former agent on the McNair case, Ken Upchurch, was found dead in his garage the night before. The official story is suicide caused by alcoholism and depression, but Shaw does not believe it. A neighbor spotted a green van near the scene. Shaw agrees to join forces with the tribal police to find the killer.
A Key Clue Links the Cases Together
Shaw takes Leaphorn and Manuelito to the dead agent’s house. Inside, they find red writing scrawled on the wall that reads “The Truth Dies With Me.” Bernadette finds a matchbook from the Katenta Trading Post, which is located back on the reservation. Outside, Joe spots a small metal ration key on the ground. It is the same type of military ration that Irene, the assassin, eats while on the job. Joe found a similar one on the reservation. This proves that Irene was at the agent’s house and that the cases are connected.
Unbeknownst to them, Irene (Franka Potente) is watching the house from a distance with binoculars. She is always one step ahead.
The Shootout at the Pink Carousel
Chee and Sonny end up at a strip club called The Pink Carousel. While Sonny heads to the back, a dancer tries to get Chee to open up about his love life. Chee realizes he has been taking Bernadette for granted. Suddenly, gunshots ring out. Sonny comes running from the back, and a man with a gun chases after them. Sonny is shot in the arm, but they manage to escape in the car, bullets shattering the rear window.
Back at Sonny’s place, Chee stitches up the wound because Sonny refuses to go to a hospital. After the pain and alcohol knock Sonny out, Chee takes the chance to search the house. He finds a handwritten note with an address and a telephone number listed for Leroy. He calls his hotel and leaves a message for Joe with the location.
Chee’s Ghost Sickness Returns
Jim Chee heads to the address, which is Leroy’s girlfriend’s apartment. He lets himself in through a window. Inside, he finds old photographs. But then, his ghost sickness hits him hard. He doubles over in pain and starts hallucinating. He sees someone gasping for air under a wool blanket, a traumatic memory from his past in Los Angeles involving his mother.
As he reaches out, the vision disappears. When he turns around, Sonny is standing there with a shotgun pointed directly at his face. Sonny demands to know who Chee really is, leaving viewers with a massive cliffhanger.
