Prime Video’s live-action God of War series has officially found its new lead. Dave Bautista, known for his roles in Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune, will now play the iconic character Kratos. He replaces Ryan Hurst, who had to leave the project after getting hurt while filming a stunt.
The news was confirmed by major entertainment outlets including The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, and Deadline on August 20, 2026. Bautista had been in talks for the role earlier in August, and the deal is now closed.
Why Ryan Hurst Left the God of War Series
Ryan Hurst was originally cast as Kratos in January 2026. Filming started in Vancouver in February 2026. But in late June 2026, Hurst suffered a torn bicep while performing a stunt on set.
The injury required surgery. His recovery time would have pushed production back into 2027. Instead of waiting, Amazon and Sony Pictures Television decided to recast the role. This is a rare move for a major production. Most shows would pause and wait for the lead actor to heal.
Four episodes had already been filmed with Hurst. These will now be reshot entirely with Bautista. Hurst had put on 40 pounds of muscle for the role. That work will not be used in the final series.
Dave Bautista Steps Into the Role
Dave Bautista is no stranger to physically demanding roles. He played Drax in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies and appeared in Dune: Part Two. He also had roles in Amazon MGM’s My Spy movies and The Wrecking Crew.
Bautista is one of the few actors in Hollywood who could take on the role of Kratos on short notice. Kratos is known for his huge muscular build in the video games. Bautista has stayed in great shape throughout his career. He does not need months of preparation to get ready for the part.
Fans have pointed out that Bautista had dropped 75 pounds in late 2024. He will likely need to bulk back up to his Drax size for this role.
What We Know About the God of War Series
Prime Video has ordered two seasons of the show. They will be filmed back-to-back. The series is based on the two most recent God of War video games. These games follow Kratos and his young son Atreus.
The official logline says: “Father and son Kratos and Atreus embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human”.
Ronald D. Moore is the showrunner. He is known for For All Mankind and Outlander. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes. Toye has directed episodes of Shogun, Westworld, Fallout, and The Boys.
Production is set to restart in Vancouver in fall 2026. Some reports say mid-October is the target. There is no release date yet. But with production starting again in fall 2026, a late 2027 release on Prime Video seems realistic.
