Netflixโs animated series Devil May Cry is coming back for a second season on May 12, 2026. The first season, based on Capcomโs video game franchise, ended with many questions left unanswered. Dante, the half-demon demon hunter, got betrayed and locked up. His long-lost twin brother Vergil showed up working for a powerful demon king. With Season 2 coming soon, here is a full breakdown of all the important events from Devil May Cry Season 1.
Spoiler alert: This article contains major spoilers for Devil May Cry Season 1.
The Story So Far: Danteโs Fight Against the White Rabbit
The first season follows Dante, a wisecracking demon hunter who takes jobs for money. He arrives in a world where demons secretly exist. The main villain is the White Rabbit, a demon terrorist who wants to break down the wall between the human world and hell. To do this, he needs the Sword of Sparda and the blood of Spardaโs descendants (Dante and his brother).
Dante teams up with Mary (also known as Lady), a soldier working for a secret government group called DARKCOM. She hates demons because one killed her mother. At first, Mary sees Dante as just another demon to kill. But over time, she learns that not all demons are evil. Their relationship grows from enemies to reluctant partners fighting the same threat.
The season builds toward a huge final battle where the White Rabbit mutates into a giant monster. With help from Mary, Dante finally kills the White Rabbit. But the victory comes at a cost. Danteโs friend Enzo dies saving him.
The Shocking Ending: Betrayal and a Frozen Demon Hunter
After the White Rabbit dies, things take a surprising turn. Dante tells Mary he wants to find his twin brother Vergil, who he thought died when they were children. The White Rabbit revealed that Vergil is alive. But instead of joining Dante, Mary attacks him. She injects him with a sedative. She tells him his blood is too dangerous to be free.
โBaines was right. With what your blood can do, it’s too dangerous to have you out in the world. Iโm sorry.โ โ Mary to Dante after betraying him
Dante ends up frozen inside a DARKCOM cryo-prison. DARKCOMโs leader, Vice President Baines, puts him away to control the threat he represents. Meanwhile, Baines starts a military attack on hell called Operation Inferno.
Vergilโs Return and the Name King Mundus
The biggest surprise of the ending comes in the final minutes. Workers at a DARKCOM prison camp get killed one by one. The killer is Vergil (voiced by Robbie Daymond), Danteโs twin brother. He looks different now, with demon horns and glowing eyes. He frees demon prisoners and tells them:
โOur King Mundus grants you your freedom. Show him gratitude. It was Mundus who freed me from my own bondage.โ โ Vergil
This reveal changes everything. King Mundus is the Prince of Darkness. He ruled the demon world until Danteโs father Sparda fought against him and locked him away. Now Mundus is free. And he has Vergil working for him.
Where Things Stand Before Season 2
When Devil May Cry Season 1 ends, here is the situation:
- Dante sits frozen inside a DARKCOM facility. He cannot escape on his own.
- Mary works with Baines but starts to see his true evil nature.
- Vergil serves King Mundus and leads demon forces.
- King Mundus plans to take over both the human world and the demon world.
- Baines starts a war against hell with human weapons.
The season ends with Vergil saying a famous line from the games: โThe sapiens and their armies arenโt aware of the storm they ride into. I am that storm.โ
What Critics and Fans Said About Season 1
Devil May Cry Season 1 received strong reviews. It holds a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The show reportedly got 5.3 million viewers in just three days after its release on April 3, 2025.
