Turkish director Ferit Karahan returns to the international festival circuit with Djinn Wedding (Cinlerin Düğünü), a magic realism family drama set to have its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival. The film will screen as part of the Platform competition on September 16, 2026. Karahan’s follow-up to the award-winning Brother’s Keeper brings together a popular Turkish cast led by Demet Özdemir and Kaan Yıldırım. With the Platform Award now offering direct Oscar eligibility for non-English-language films, the stakes for this Turkish drama are higher than ever.
What Djinn Wedding Is About
Set in a remote Anatolian village, Djinn Wedding follows four siblings across three periods of their lives: childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. The story centres on a family reunion for their sister’s wedding, where long-buried memories and dark secrets begin to surface.
The eldest son, Deniz (İlhan Şen), managed to leave the village to study in the city. His sister Ceren (Demet Özdemir) sees marriage as her only way out. The younger brother, Halit (Kaan Yıldırım), stayed behind to care for their disabled brother Yasin (Sarp Bozkurt). During Ceren’s wedding, suppressed family tensions and a hidden crime come back to light.
The film runs 132 minutes and is in Turkish. It is produced by Ferit Karahan Film, Royal Pictures, Maya Films, and Arya Yapim, with Luxbox handling international sales.
Ferit Karahan Returns After Brother’s Keeper
Ferit Karahan, born in Muş, Turkey, on April 4, 1983, is a Kurdish filmmaker whose work explores violence, social isolation, and invisible forces. His 2021 feature Brother’s Keeper won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival and collected more than 40 awards worldwide.
Karahan said Djinn Wedding is a much more autobiographical film for him than his previous work. The story draws from broader personal memories of family, home, siblings, loss, and silence.
“In ‘Brother’s Keeper,’ the source of oppression was more visible: the school, authority, the system created by adults. In ‘Djinn Wedding,’ that oppression is no longer outside the characters. It has seeped into the family, into memory, even into the ways people love one another.”
The Cast: Demet Özdemir and Kaan Yıldırım Lead
Demet Özdemir plays Ceren, the sister whose wedding becomes the backdrop for the family’s reckoning. Özdemir is known for her roles in Turkish TV series like Erkenci Kuş and Adım Farah. This role marks a shift toward art-house cinema for the popular actress.
Kaan Yıldırım plays Halit, the brother who stayed in the village. İlhan Şen portrays Deniz, the eldest son who left for the city. Sarp Bozkurt plays Yasin, the disabled brother. Helin Kandemir and Evliya Aykan also star.
The supporting cast includes Tuba Ünsal, Baki Davrak, Erol Babaoğlu, Kubilay Çamlıdağ, Mine Çayıroğlu, Hakan Salınmış, Barış Hacıhan, Gürhan Altundaşar, Deniz Barut, and Hasibe Eren.
Djinn Folklore and Magical Realism in Anatolia
The film draws heavily on Anatolian folklore about djinn — invisible beings that share the world with humans in Islamic and Middle Eastern cultures. Karahan grew up in a region where these stories were part of everyday life.
“In Anatolian culture specifically, but also more broadly across Islamic cultures, djinn are invisible beings who share the same world as humans. Stories about them are often intertwined with the night, abandoned places, thresholds, weddings and death.”
Karahan uses magical realism not to escape reality, but to make it bearable and tellable. The film deals with universal themes of loss, guilt, and mourning, while also touching on intergenerational trauma.
“Can a person who refuses to acknowledge their own darkness ever truly change their fate? I don’t think the most dangerous thing about human beings is that we have dark impulses. The real danger is denying that they exist.”
TIFF 2026 Platform Competition and Oscar Qualification
Djinn Wedding is one of 12 films selected for the Platform competition at TIFF 2026, which runs from September 10 to 20. The Platform section has expanded this year and now serves as one of six international film festival competitions that automatically qualify non-English-language films for the Best International Feature Film Oscar.
The winning film of the TIFF Platform Award will secure direct Oscar eligibility. The jury is led by Argentine filmmaker Pablo Trapero as president, joined by British director Amma Asante, Taiwanese actor and filmmaker Sylvia Chang, French-Canadian producer Luc Déry, and Hong Kong film executive Albert Lee. The winning filmmaker receives a C$20,000 cash prize.
Trailer Released Ahead of Premiere
The first trailer for Djinn Wedding was released in September 2026, giving audiences a first look at the film’s atmospheric Anatolian setting. The trailer highlights the family tensions and the mysterious, folkloric elements that drive the story.
The film’s premiere is scheduled for September 16, 2026, at TIFF. Press and market screenings took place on September 12, with additional screenings on September 17 and September 18.
Demet Özdemir’s Oscar Ambition
Demet Özdemir has spoken openly about the film’s Oscar potential. In July 2026, she said the team hopes to win the Platform Award and secure a path to the Academy Awards.
“We want to win as the only Turkish film in Toronto. If we win, we’ll have a ticket to the Oscars!”
Her statement reflects the new Oscar qualification rules that make the TIFF Platform Award a direct gateway to the international feature category.
