Do Ji-ui’s hidden trauma finally comes to light as a shocking incident on Jin-eon Island forces him to confront the memories he tried to bury.

The latest episode of the hit K-drama Doctor on the Edge delivers emotional depth alongside medical dilemmas. Episode 9, which aired on June 29, shows the main couple Do Ji-ui (Lee Jae-wook) and Yuk Ha-ri (Shin Ye-eun) traveling together to Jin-eon Island for a medical visit. While their relationship grows stronger, the episode focuses on the dark secrets from Ji-ui’s past.

The episode starts with Ji-ui and Ha-ri finally together as a couple. Their chemistry feels real and natural, though they keep their relationship a secret from most people around them. The funny part is how everyone except Chi-yeon thinks they have broken up. Ju-cheon even jokes that Ji-ui got dumped.

A Shocking Incident on Jin-eon Island

The peaceful trip takes a sudden turn when the village chief grabs Ji-ui by the collar and breaks down in tears. The shocking moment leaves both Ji-ui and Ha-ri completely shaken. This incident raises new questions about what is happening on the island.

The couple visits Jin-eon Island to provide medical care to local residents. Although Ji-ui still struggles with his fear of the sea, he appears much calmer with Ha-ri by his side. But the unexpected crisis they face on the island changes everything.

Stills released before the episode showed the village chief causing a commotion before falling to the ground while crying. The sad expressions on Lee Jae-wook and Shin Ye-eun‘s faces in these images hinted that something serious had happened.

Ji-ui’s Heartbreaking Backstory Finally Revealed

The emotional highlight of Episode 9 comes when the series finally explains why Ji-ui fears the sea. The flashback shows a happy memory between Ji-ui and his fiancรฉe. But everything falls apart when they find Seonu unconscious by the shore.

After failing to save Seonu, Ji-ui’s life completely collapses. His engagement ends, the woman he loved leaves him, and he carries overwhelming guilt and isolation. This painful backstory explains the trauma that has haunted him throughout the series.

The episode ends on a comforting note. Ha-ri gently asks Ji-ui about his fear, and instead of staying silent, he finally opens up. Ha-ri simply hugs him and asks him to lean on her from now on. This moment shows how their relationship has grown strong enough to handle deep emotional wounds.

The production team described Episode 9 as featuring both the sweetness of the renewed relationship and a major new incident on Jin-eon Island. Significant changes also await the storylines of other characters like Jeong-seon and Ju-cheon.

Medical Ethics and Island Healthcare Challenges

Beyond the romance, the episode tackles a difficult moral question. Ji-ui and Ha-ri treat several elderly women who have fallen sick on another part of the island. They discover that the grannies received IV injections from a former nurse.

What this nurse did was illegal, and Ji-ui wants to report her immediately. However, a villager begs him not to, explaining that healthcare access on the island is extremely limited. The ex-nurse has spent years helping people who had no one else to turn to. Reporting her could lead to more deaths.

Ji-ui sympathizes with the villagers, but Chi-yeon reports the situation to the police anyway. She believes that allowing unlicensed medical treatment could cause a tragedy. This storyline highlights the real struggles faced by remote island communities with limited healthcare.

Other Character Developments

The episode also shows developments in other relationships. Yong Ju-cheon (Kim Yoon-woo) appears sad after watching Kim Ji-woong (Kim Sung-jung) enter Uhm Jung-sun (Lee Soo-kyung)’s house. The contrast between Ju-cheon, who cannot hide his irritation during acupuncture treatment, and Ji-woong, who appears to be in pain, draws viewer attention.

Fans are now curious about who Kim Ji-woong really is and how his presence will affect the romance between Jung-sun and Ju-cheon. This adds another layer of intrigue to the already complex storyline.
