Karthik Subbaraj‘s Tamil film Dorothy had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on September 12, 2026. The screening took place at Toronto’s Scotiabank Theatre. When the credits rolled, the audience stood up and applauded the cast and crew. The film stars Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, and Rishikanth in key roles. It is the first Tamil feature to premiere at TIFF in a decade.
A Big Moment For Tamil Cinema At TIFF
The film was shown in the Centrepiece section of the festival. This section was formerly known as Contemporary World Cinema. It highlights celebrated filmmakers and major international premieres. Dorothy was one of only ten world premieres in this category.
Director Karthik Subbaraj attended the screening. He was joined by lead actress Keerthy Suresh, actors Sananth and Rishikanth, and producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. Photos and videos from the event spread quickly on social media. Fans shared clips of the long applause inside the theatre.
Production house Sikhya Entertainment posted about the night on social media. They called it “truly unforgettable.” Their post also noted that the ovation was “a beautiful beginning to Dorothy’s journey into the world.” The premiere was a proud moment for the team and for Tamil cinema on the global stage.
What Dorothy Is About
Dorothy is set in rural Tamil Nadu in the early 1990s. The story follows Karthi and Subbu, two boys who grow up as close friends. Their lives change when Dorothy enters their world. She is a kind-hearted member of the household who cares for them. When a misfortune befalls her, the boys are pushed into a harsh reality. The film explores themes of friendship, caste, masculinity, and compassion.
TIFF’s official synopsis describes the film as a story set in a world shaped by caste, violence, and toxic masculinity. The narrative shows how Dorothy’s compassion quietly challenges the world around her. Karthik Subbaraj has said the story comes from a culture he knows well. He also believes its questions about friendship and human connection are universal.
“Dorothy is a story that comes from a place and culture I know intimately, but its questions around friendship, prejudice and human connection are universal. To have its world premiere at TIFF is incredibly special.” – Karthik Subbaraj
The film marks Subbaraj’s 10th feature as a director. He is known for films like Jigarthanda and Pizza. Dorothy is a personal project he has carried for a long time.
Ilaiyaraaja’s Music Adds Special Touch
Legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja created the original score and songs for Dorothy. This is his 1,540th film as a music director. His involvement has been a major part of the film’s buzz before release.
Two songs from the film, “Kalyana Virundhu” and “Muthumani”, have each crossed 10 million views on YouTube. Both tracks have also appeared among the Top 5 trending music videos on YouTube India. The film’s 18-track soundtrack was presented as a live concert in Chennai. The event, called the Dorothy Concert, was held at Image Auditorium. Musicians performed the score for around 40 minutes to a strong audience response.
Subbaraj spoke about what Ilaiyaraaja’s music means to the project.
“And to have Ilaiyaraaja sir’s music accompany that journey makes it even more special.” – Karthik Subbaraj
The producer also praised the film’s distinct voice. Jyoti Deshpande, President of Jio Studios, said Dorothy is a powerful example of cinema crossing languages when the emotion at its centre is universal.
