Drawn Together (also known as Enfrentados: Marfil) arrived on Prime Video on September 9, 2026, and it did not take long for viewers to start talking about its final minutes. The Spanish romantic thriller, adapted from Mercedes Ron‘s Enfrentados duology, follows Marfil Cortés (Ester Expósito), the daughter of a wealthy businessman who is kidnapped and released with no memory of what happened. Her father hires a bodyguard named Sebastián Moore (Hugo Diego García) to protect her, and what starts as a tense arrangement turns into something far more complicated.
The film ends on a major cliffhanger, and both lead stars have shared their thoughts on what that ending means for their characters.
What Happens at the End of Drawn Together
The final act of Drawn Together delivers two massive reveals. First, Sebastián is not a private security guard hired by Marfil’s father. He and his partner Ray (Joaquín Ferreira) are actually FBI agents running an undercover operation. They orchestrated Marfil’s initial kidnapping to pressure her father, Alejandro (Pablo Molinero), into cooperating with the FBI against the Russian mobster Kozel.
The second reveal is that Marfil’s father is not a legitimate businessman. He is a mobster who tried to kill Kozel by blowing up a plane. Kozel survived, but twenty of his men died, and a war between the two men began. The kidnapping was a setup to make Alejandro seek FBI protection, and Sebastián was placed in Marfil’s life as part of that plan.
After these truths come out, Marfil and Sebastián return to New York City from Spain. Marfil receives a text from her father asking to meet in Times Square. The family is supposedly heading into witness protection in Buenos Aires, so she believes she will never see Sebastián again. Sebastián finds the setup suspicious, so he gives Marfil a tiny microphone with a code word she can say if she is in danger.
Marfil is met by the family’s butler instead of her father. The butler betrays the family and delivers Marfil to Kozel, who kidnaps her before Sebastián can reach her. In a parallel scene, Sebastián finds Alejandro’s body in the trunk of a car and is surrounded by gunmen as the film ends.
Who Is Kozel and What Happened to Alejandro
Kozel is not just any enemy. He is the Russian mobster who has been after Marfil’s family. A key detail revealed in the ending is that the man who introduced himself as Kozel was actually an imposter. The real Kozel died in the plane explosion, and his son, Iván, has taken over the operation. Iván had even met Marfil earlier at a horse racing derby, pretending to be someone else.
Alejandro’s fate is left in a grim place. His body is found in the trunk of a car, confirming that he did not survive the trap. This leaves Marfil alone and in the hands of the enemy as the credits roll.
Ester Expósito on Marfil’s Feelings for Sebastián
The biggest question after the ending is whether Marfil has forgiven Sebastián for lying to her and being part of her kidnapping. Ester Expósito was direct about this in an interview with Swooon.
“No, I think she hasn’t. But her love for him is above everything. It’s always gonna have more weight [and] be heavier than everything else.”
This answer shows that Marfil’s feelings are deeply conflicted. She has not moved past the betrayal, but her love for Sebastián is still the strongest force in her life.
Hugo Diego García on the Sequel’s Tone
Hugo Diego García described the sequel, Drawn Apart (Enfrentados: Ébano), in very specific terms. He called it a “mix of John Wick and Rambo and Taken, but with the heart of The Notebook” as Sebastián stops at nothing to rescue Marfil.
Mercedes Ron, the author of the books, also shared what to expect from the second film. She said the story will focus more on the thriller and dark sides of the plot, while still keeping the romance at its core.
“She’s gonna have mixed feelings about Sebastián. But I don’t want to make a spoiler. She loves him so much. So at the end, love always wins.”
How the Movie Ending Differs from the Book
The Drawn Together movie ends very differently from Mercedes Ron‘s original book. In the novel, Sebastián is a drug dealer who was saved from poverty by Marfil’s father and given a career before becoming her bodyguard. The book’s ending involves Sebastián tricking Marfil and drugging her, a much darker resolution than the FBI twist in the film.
This change was made for the adaptation, and it sets up a different path for the sequel. The film’s ending leaves Marfil in Kozel’s hands, while Sebastián is surrounded by gunmen, creating a high-stakes rescue scenario for Drawn Apart.

Drawn Apart has already finished filming, according to multiple reports. Prime Video has not announced an official release date yet. The second book in the duology, also titled Drawn Apart, is set to be published on March 2, 2027, which suggests the film will not arrive before that date.
Ester Expósito and Hugo Diego García have both confirmed they have already shot their scenes for the sequel. The film will pick up right where the cliffhanger left off, with Marfil in captivity and Sebastián fighting to save her.
