Elizabeth Olsen has confirmed she is eager to return as the Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While speaking at the Hamptons International Film Festival, the actress acknowledged the widespread talk of “superhero fatigue,” but made it clear that her connection to the character and the fans remains strong.

Olsen’s Commitment to the Scarlet Witch

During a panel discussion for her new film Eternity, Elizabeth Olsen spoke openly about her future in the MCU. She expressed a deep affection for Wanda Maximoff and a desire to continue her story.

“It is something that I love, and itโ€™s something I always want to return to,” Olsen stated. She reflected on the past five years, noting that the character’s development exceeded her expectations. She also hinted at future potential, saying, “There are still character through lines that have happened in the comics that Iโ€™d love to do that I think fans also want to.”

Olsen first appeared as Wanda Maximoff nearly a decade ago. Her role expanded significantly with the critically acclaimed series WandaVision in 2021, which earned her an Emmy nomination. Her character’s journey seemingly ended with her death in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, though the concept of the multiverse leaves the door open for her return.

Addressing Superhero Fatigue and Critics

The actress directly addressed the current cultural conversation about superhero fatigue, a topic that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige is also actively tackling. Olsen offered a nuanced perspective, comparing the experience of being in a long-running franchise to being part of a family.

“Some people have ongoing television series that they get to return to. Very few, I feel like, get to be a part of franchises that, I know we might culturally get a little bit exhausted by, but there is something about them that becomes very familial,” she explained.

She also made a clear distinction about who these films are made for, saying, “I mean, these movies aren’t for critics, these movies are for fans.” Despite the character’s intense arc, Olsen affirmed that her enjoyment has only grown, noting, “Itโ€™s really fruitful, and the stories have only gotten better for me, my character. I really enjoyed it.”

The Value of a Consistent Role

For Olsen, the stability provided by a franchise role has been personally and professionally valuable. She described the unique nature of the MCU, something she doesn’t expect to find again outside of an ongoing television series.

“Thereโ€™s nothing else really like it, and I donโ€™t know that Iโ€™ll have [that] again unless itโ€™s for an ongoing show,” Olsen said. She highlighted the personal benefits of this consistency, adding, “I do like that kind of consistency. It feels good. I mean, job security feels nice โ€” I think we can all agree on that.”

This sentiment echoes her past comments about not approaching her career with a “one for them, one for me” mentality. She has previously said that the security Marvel provided gave her the freedom to choose other roles without financial pressure.

What’s Next for Olsen and the MCU

While promoting her independent film Eternity, Olsen’s comments come at a time when recent MCU films have seen varied box office performance. Her remarks reinforce that key actors remain committed to the universe.

Industry rumors suggest that Elizabeth Olsen could reappear as Wanda Maximoff in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. While her character’s fate was sealed in her last appearance, the rules of the multiverse mean that death is rarely permanent in the MCU.
