Eric André Reveals Why He Passed on Kieran Culkin's Award-Winning Role in A Real Pain

Eric André, known for his chaotic and surreal comedy, recently shared that he was initially offered the role of Benji in the film A Real Pain. This is the same role that ultimately earned Kieran Culkin widespread acclaim and several awards. Speaking on a recent podcast, André explained his decision to turn down the part, citing the character’s deeply unhappy nature.

Character’s Dark Nature

André described the character of Benji as “miserable” and expressed that he wasn’t drawn to portraying such a consistently negative persona. He acknowledged the script was excellent and praised the film’s writer and director, Jesse Eisenberg. However, the comedian felt the role wasn’t the right fit for him at that particular time in his career.

Culkin’s Acclaimed Portrayal

Ultimately, the role went to Kieran Culkin, who delivered a performance that resonated with audiences and critics alike. Culkin’s portrayal of the emotionally complex and often cynical Benji garnered him numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe Award and a Critics’ Choice Movie Award. André openly acknowledged Culkin’s success, jokingly saying, “Motherf—er won an Oscar for it,” though Culkin has not yet won an Oscar.

André Focused on Comedy

André’s decision to pass on the role highlights the different paths actors take and the types of characters they are drawn to. While A Real Pain has comedic elements, Benji’s underlying sadness is a central aspect of the narrative. André, primarily known for his outlandish comedic style, may have felt that taking on such a somber role would be a significant departure from his established persona. He continues to work on various comedy projects, including his popular talk show, The Eric André Show.

Film’s Story Explored Grief

A Real Pain follows two estranged cousins, Benji and Mark (played by Jesse Eisenberg), who travel to Poland after their beloved aunt passes away. They join a bizarre Holocaust tour, and the film explores themes of grief, family dynamics, and personal struggles against the backdrop of historical tragedy. The contrast between the cousins’ personalities, with Benji’s cynicism clashing against Mark’s more reserved nature, forms the emotional core of the movie.

No Regrets for André

Despite the critical acclaim and awards success the role brought Culkin, André doesn’t seem to harbor any regrets about his decision. He spoke highly of Culkin’s performance, indicating that he believes the right actor was ultimately cast. This instance provides an interesting look into the casting process and how different actors connect with different roles.
