The fourth episode of Euphoria Season 1, titled “Shook Ones Pt. II,” put the spotlight on the town carnival where everything changed for several characters. This HBO psychological drama episode aired in July 2019 and gave viewers deeper looks into Jules Vaughn and Cal Jacobs while moving other stories forward. The carnival setting brought many characters together in one place, creating tense moments that shaped the rest of the season.

Zendaya leads the cast as Rue Bennett, a teenager trying to stay clean while looking after her younger sister Gia at the carnival. Rue spends much of the episode worrying about her growing feelings for Jules and trying to keep her sister out of trouble. The episode shows Rue’s protective side, especially when she finds Gia smoking with older boys. This moment hits hard because Gia witnessed Rue’s overdose, making Rue fear her sister might follow the same path.

Hunter Schafer Delivers A Breakthrough Performance As Jules Vaughn

Hunter Schafer, in her first acting role, plays Jules Vaughn. Episode 4 digs into Jules’ past, showing her time in a psychiatric facility and the struggles she faced growing up. The carnival becomes a nightmare for Jules when she spots Cal Jacobs (Eric Dane) working at his family’s chili booth. Jules had a violent one-night stand with Cal in the first episode, and seeing him with his family shakes her deeply.

Jules convinces Rue that Cal is the man from the motel, but Rue does not believe her. To prove it, Jules walks up to Cal’s booth and asks for chili. Cal’s hands shake so badly he spills the cup while serving her. The moment gets worse when Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) watches the whole exchange from nearby. Later that night, Jules goes to meet the person she has been talking to on a dating app, only to discover it is Nate. He threatens to report her for child pornography because of the explicit photos she sent, leaving Jules terrified.

After Nate’s threat, Jules runs not to her own home but to Rue’s house. The two end up in bed together, holding each other. Schafer described this moment as Jules turning away from toxic relationships with men and finding safety with her best friend.

Eric Dane Brings The Tension As Cal Jacobs

Eric Dane plays Cal Jacobs, Nate’s father who hides a secret life. The carnival scene where Jules approaches his booth is a major turning point. Cal’s panic is clear as he realizes a teenager he slept with knows who he really is. His hands shake, he spills the chili, and he cannot hide his fear. Later, Cal finds Jules alone and begs her not to ruin his family. The conversation stays calm, but the threat underneath is clear.

Zendaya Leads As Rue Bennett

Zendaya’s Rue Bennett carries the emotional weight of the episode. She tries to stay clean for Jules while watching over her sister Gia (Storm Reid). Rue does not believe Jules about Cal at first, which creates tension between them. When Rue finds Gia smoking behind the carnival, she realizes she cannot protect her sister from everything. Zendaya’s performance shows Rue’s fear of losing the people she loves, whether to drugs or to other people.

Alexa Demie And Jacob Elordi Bring The Chaos As Maddy And Nate

Alexa Demie plays Maddy Perez, who shows up to the carnival in a revealing outfit. Nate Jacobs (Jacob Elordi) gets angry when he sees her clothes, especially because his parents are nearby. He leaves Maddy alone, so she finds Cassie Howard (Sydney Sweeney) and the two decide to do molly together.

Maddy later approaches Nate’s family booth and insults his mother. Nate reacts by grabbing Maddy’s neck and leaving a bruise. The scene shows Nate’s violent temper and Maddy’s willingness to stay with him despite the abuse. Elordi’s portrayal of Nate as controlling and dangerous makes the scene uncomfortable to watch.

Barbie Ferreira Shows Kat Hernandez Finding Confidence

Barbie Ferreira plays Kat Hernandez, who starts the episode hanging out with Ethan (Austin Abrams). Kat misreads a situation when she sees Ethan talking to another girl, assumes the worst, and leaves him. She then hooks up with Luke (Will Peltz) at the carnival. The episode also shows Kat debuting a new wardrobe, a way for her to project confidence after her previous experiences with online camming. Ferreira explained that Kat decides to control her own boundaries instead of letting others define her.

Sydney Sweeney Brings The Messy Energy As Cassie Howard

Sydney Sweeney plays Cassie Howard, who gets left alone at the carnival by her boyfriend McKay (Algee Smith). Cassie joins Maddy in taking molly and ends up having a very public reaction on the merry-go-round. The scene is awkward and funny but also sad, showing Cassie’s need for attention and her struggles with self-worth.

Cassie and Maddy get high and make bad decisions. Kat leaves a good guy for a hookup. Nate reveals his cruelty to Jules and his violence to Maddy. By the end, Jules runs to Rue, and the two find comfort in each other’s arms. Euphoria Season 1 Episode 4 remains one of the show’s most talked-about episodes because it brings so many characters together in one place and lets the tension explode. The carnival setting creates a pressure cooker where secrets come out and relationships change forever.
