A fake CBFC certificate claiming that Vijay’s upcoming film Jana Nayagan had received an ‘A’ rating went viral on social media on July 4, 2026. The image caused significant confusion among fans who have been waiting for the film’s release for over seven months. The film was originally scheduled for a Pongal release on January 9, 2026.
The forged certificate, which appeared to be an edited version of Vijay’s previous film Leo‘s censor certificate, claimed that the movie had been cleared with an ‘A’ certificate and had a runtime of three hours. It also listed specific modifications, including the muting of curse words, the removal of violent visuals, and the excision of blood splatter.
KVN Productions, the film’s production house, quickly dismissed the circulating image as fake. The production house confirmed that the CBFC has only asked for some final changes after its review. The film will receive certification only after those edits are completed.
The fan account that initially posted the fake certificate later issued an apology on social media. The account posted, “We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. The previously shared #JanaNayagan certificate was fake”.
The Fake Certificate Details and Fan Confusion
The fraudulent certificate claimed that Jana Nayagan had been certified as an ‘A’ film and was three hours long, with the certification supposedly granted on Friday. The document listed various changes, including the muting of profanity, the removal of violent visuals, and the excision of blood splatter.
According to the fake certificate, the total deletions amounted to 00:43 (MM), and the film’s final runtime was listed as 180:00 (MM). It also claimed that words such as “Chotta,” “Puna,” and “Fu**k,” among others, were muted. Additionally, it stated that the flash visuals depicting the killing of the Collector by Shanmugam had been shortened.
The viral image sparked intense fan discussions regarding the movie’s runtime, censor cuts, and age rating. However, it has been confirmed as completely fabricated. The filmmakers have not yet received or announced the official censor certificate.
Sources clarified that the actual censor board certificate for Jana Nayagan has not been made public, urging fans to ignore unverified online rumors. This situation highlights how quickly doctored images can spread across social media, particularly for major, highly anticipated releases.
CBFC Seeks Final Revisions Before Certification
While the fake certificate caused a stir, the reality is that the CBFC has recently completed its review of the film and sent the makers a list of final revisions. Speaking to SCREEN, the producer confirmed that once they make all the changes asked for by the board, they will hopefully get the green light to bring Vijay’s much-awaited film to theatres.
A source close to the film told India Today that the team was still waiting for the clearance and expected it by next week.
“We are still awaiting the clearance, which is expected to come by next week. As of now all the buzz around it getting A certificate is nothing but speculations. We are hopeful to get it soon, and post which we will announce the release date”.
The growing buzz is understandable, as the film finally seems to be inching towards release after remaining stalled for nearly seven months. Reports suggest that theatres across Tamil Nadu are gearing up to begin advance bookings, anticipating the necessary clearance.
Why Jana Nayagan Faced a 7-Month Delay
Jana Nayagan has faced multiple delays since January 2026 due to censor objections, a legal dispute, and a piracy leak. The film was originally set to release on January 9, 2026.
The film’s certification was put on hold after a member of the censor board reportedly raised objections to certain scenes, claiming they could offend public sentiment. Following the objections, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) recommended that the film be referred to its revising committee.
In response, the makers, KVN Productions, approached the Madras High Court, seeking directions to fast-track the certification process. The move resulted in a legal battle between the production house and the CBFC that lasted for nearly a month. The producers eventually withdrew their petition and agreed to submit the film to the revising committee.
Adding to the trouble, an HD print of the film leaked online earlier this year, before its release. Police later arrested a few people linked to this piracy case, which created more pressure on the team. The Jana Nayagan leak case reached another crucial stage after Chennai Police informed the Madras High Court that Vijay’s film was watched illegally by nearly 1.2 crore people before receiving certification.
In April, an HD print of the film was leaked online, leading to several arrests, including that of a freelance editor associated with another project. Although there were hopes for the film to be released in time for Vijay’s birthday in June, those plans did not materialize.
Current Status and Expected Release Timeline
KVN Productions’ business head, Suprith Mohan, has revealed that the team is aiming to bring the film to cinemas in the last week of July or the first week of August. According to reports, the makers are aiming to release the film on July 16. If the timeline changes, July 23 is reportedly being considered as the backup date. July 31 is also under discussion, although its chances appear uncertain since Jason Sanjay’s directorial debut, Sigma, is slated to hit theatres on the same day.
The production is reportedly considering July 24 or July 31. An official announcement addressing the film’s theatrical release and censorship status is expected to drop this coming Monday, ahead of its reported target release date on July 24.
