Matt Murdock might be going to jail, and his old friend is coming back to do something shockingโ€”wear the Daredevil suit.

Even before Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 finishes its run on Disney+, set photos from Season 3 have already leaked online. These pictures show a full Defenders reunion. Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Finn Jones (Danny Rand/Iron Fist) were all seen filming together in New York City.

This marks the first time these four actors have shared the screen since Netflix’s ‘The Defenders’ in 2017. While seeing the whole team back is exciting for fans, it raises a specific question. Why is Finn Jones back as Danny Rand right now? What job does the Iron Fist have in a Daredevil show?

The answer comes directly from Marvel comic books.

Matt Murdock’s Big Problem in Season 3

The leaked set photos show Charlie Cox wearing an orange prison jumpsuit. This strongly suggests that by the end of Season 2, Matt Murdock’s secret identity as Daredevil is exposed to the world.

In the current season, Matt Murdock is fighting to take down Mayor Wilson Fisk (Kingpin). If Fisk loses power, he will likely reveal to the public that the blind lawyer is actually the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. This forces the police to arrest Matt for his actions as a vigilante.

Once Matt is in prison, Hell’s Kitchen becomes unprotected. The city needs a hero to keep the streets safe. This is where Danny Rand walks in.

How Iron Fist Saves Daredevil According to the Comics

The comics have a famous storyline where exactly this happens. After his identity is revealed, Matt Murdock ends up in Rikers Island prison. But while Matt sits in jail, people still see Daredevil jumping across the rooftops of New York.

Matt eventually breaks out of prison to find this imposter. When he corners the fake Daredevil, he pulls off the mask to discover it is his friend, Danny Rand.

Danny explains he put on the suit to protect Matt’s legacy. He wanted people to think the real Daredevil was still free so that Matt could get a fair trial or prove his innocence.

Charlie Cox teased this new direction in an interview with Entertainment Weekly in March 2026: “I haven’t read the whole thing, but, no, it feels like we’ve shed the skin of the Mayor Fisk era. It feels like it’s a new book, a new dawn a little bitโ€ฆ It’s a new thing, which is fun.”

Setting Up the Battle for the Devil’s Cowl

Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 looks ready to adapt the comic arc called “The Battle for the Devil’s Cowl.” In this story, Danny Rand does not just fill in for Matt for one night. He actively fights crime as Daredevil to keep the hope alive for the people of Hell’s Kitchen.

This gives Finn Jones a significant role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It also fixes a major problem for the writers. If Matt is in prison, there is no show without a hero in costume. By bringing in Iron Fist to wear the red suit, the show can continue the action while Matt plans his return from behind bars.

Mike Colter had hinted at his return (and the team-up) on the Inside of You podcast in March 2026. When asked about coming back as Luke Cage, he said, “Now it’s time.” He also confirmed he had talks with Marvel and believed it was “very, very likely” he would return.

When to Watch

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is currently airing on Disney+. New episodes drop every Tuesday.

The season finale is expected to set up Matt’s arrest, leading directly into Season 3. While Disney+ has not announced an official release date for Season 3 yet (it is expected in 2027), the Defenders are officially back together and filming now.
