Fire Country returned to CBS on Friday, October 9, 2026, for its fifth season with a two-episode opening that put Edgewater through a sinkhole, a shooting, a wildfire, and a wave of personal reckonings for nearly every member of Station 42 and Three Rock. Episode 1, titled “Founders’ Day,” and Episode 2, “Fire Under Fire,” aired back-to-back weeks and together set the tone for a season built on resource shortages, new faces, and old family wounds.
The premiere brought Olivia Thirlby into the main cast as Cecilia Jade “CJ” Ryan, a former firefighter with a hidden reason for running from her old life. Her arrival lined up with the return of Max Thieriot as Bode Leone, Kevin Alejandro as Manny Perez, Diane Farr as Sharon Leone, Jordan Calloway as Jake Crawford, and Jules Latimer as Eve Edwards. Stephanie Arcila’s Gabriela and Leven Rambin’s Audrey James are not part of the season, leaving Bode’s personal story open to new directions.
Episode 1: A Sinkhole Swallows Founders’ Day
Edgewater’s annual Founders’ Day festival became the backdrop for the season’s first major emergency. A massive sinkhole opened beneath Main Street while residents were gathered for the celebration, trapping people underground and forcing Station 42 into a rescue with limited manpower and equipment. The town was already stretched thin after the flood aftermath, and the sinkhole made the shortage of resources impossible to ignore.
The rescue carried real danger beyond the collapse itself. Flammable gas from the sewer tunnel raised the risk for the crews working underground, and the episode used the disaster to show how badly Edgewater needs more firefighters.
Bode Steps Into a Bigger Leadership Role
Bode spent much of the premiere doing what he has done since the series began: moving toward the danger and trying to hold the rescue together. The difference in Season 5 is that the show placed him in a more direct leadership position, with Station 42 short on staff and the town leaning on the people who were available.
That leadership push carried into Episode 2. After Station 42 learned it would not receive a budget increase to hire more firefighters, Bode proposed using unpaid volunteer firefighters to handle less demanding calls. The idea became the seed of a volunteer fire department for Edgewater, and Bode began recruiting his first volunteer: CJ.
CJ Ryan Arrives With a Hidden Past
CJ’s introduction came before the sinkhole even opened. Bode met her while she was camping near Edgewater and invited her to the town’s Founders’ Day celebration. She ended up falling into the sinkhole during the rescue and then found herself in the line of fire when a gunman attacked the fire station later in the episode.
Episode 2 gave CJ a reason to stay. While she first tried to leave Edgewater the following day, she instead helped fight a fast-moving vegetation fire, where the same gunman attacked the firefighters again. The shooting pushed her to believe the bullets might have been meant for her, and she eventually told Bode the truth about her past.
CJ’s story: she was a firefighter in Pennsylvania six months earlier when her captain and several colleagues ran an illicit operation and offered her a place in it. She refused. Her captain then sent her into a stairwell on a call, knowing the building had serious violations, in what looked like an attempt to make her death appear line-of-duty. CJ survived and ran. She had vowed never to work as a firefighter again, but Bode’s request to help launch the volunteer department changed her mind.
“The more you learn, the more you’ll see she does have a reason to be suspicious,” Olivia Thirlby told Parade about CJ.
Manny Faces His Nephew Angel at Three Rock
Manny’s family story became one of the most personal threads of the two episodes. His nephew Angel, played by Ethan Jones Romero, arrived at Three Rock, and Manny was immediately against him staying there. Eve believed Angel deserved a chance to prove himself, while Manny judged him through the history of Angel’s father, Manny’s brother.
The shooting at Station 42 sharpened Manny’s suspicion. He believed Angel’s arrival and his brother’s criminal world explained the attack, even without evidence. Eve pushed back, arguing that Angel should be judged on his actions at Three Rock rather than on his father’s choices.
Angel ended up in danger from something other than bullets. During the wildfire in Episode 2, he stumbled into bees and suffered an allergic reaction while Three Rock was taking cover. Manny rushed to help save him.
“His brother was once his hero,” the episode showed, before Manny told Camille that his brother went from teaching him to swim to becoming a ruthless killer serving life.
The hour ended with Angel taking a phone call from his father in prison, a clear sign that Manny’s brother is about to become part of the season’s story.
Jake Survives the Shooting, but the Aftermath Is Not Simple
The premiere’s final seconds put Jake Crawford in direct danger when Station 42 came under gunfire. Episode 2 resolved the cliffhanger quickly: Jake’s helmet absorbed the worst of the impact, and he went home with what amounted to glass fibers in his head rather than a life-threatening wound.
His recovery at home was not smooth. Jake and Violet learned that a pregnancy test came back negative after they had believed they might be expecting. Violet wanted Jake to take time before returning to work. Jake insisted on going back, and their disagreement became a question of whether that decision belonged to him alone. The argument ended with Violet sleeping in the guest room.
Jake’s later difficulty under renewed gunfire showed that returning to the job and recovering from the attack were two different things.
Sharon Leone Helps Untangle the Shooting
Sharon returned to a central role in the investigation. With help from Mickey Fox and Hank Iglesias from Sheriff Country, the team learned that the shooter was not connected to Angel or CJ’s past. The gunman was Bryce Moffat, an Edgewater resident who blamed Station 42 for his mother’s death after the firehouse was overwhelmed with calls and could not reach the family home in time.
The younger Moffat brother set fires to create a wildfire as a distraction, then used the chaos to pin down the firefighters. The older brother, who had initially been suspected of involvement, talked the younger brother down.
Sharon also worked the investigation alongside the sheriff’s department and challenged Manny’s assumptions about Angel, helping separate his fear for the department from his unresolved feelings about his family.
Eve Edwards Stands Between Manny and Angel
Eve’s role in the two episodes centered on Three Rock and on Angel’s place there. She argued that Angel should be given room to show who he is, not treated as an extension of his father’s crimes. When Manny’s suspicion turned toward Angel after the shooting, Eve was the one telling him he did not have proof and had not seen Angel in years.
Her position kept the Three Rock story from becoming a one-note conflict and gave Manny a counterweight inside the camp.
