Fool Night, the acclaimed dystopian manga by Kasumi Yasuda, is officially getting an anime adaptation. Netflix made the announcement during its Anime Studio Focus panel at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival. The series is set for a global release on the streaming platform in 2026.
The project brings together two legendary animation studios for the first time. Sunrise, known for Mobile Suit Gundam and Cowboy Bebop, is collaborating with Shaft, the studio behind Puella Magi Madoka Magica and the Monogatari series. This historic partnership has already generated significant buzz among anime fans worldwide.
Netflix also released a teaser trailer, key visual, and announced the main cast and production staff. The teaser offers a first look at the series’ dark and atmospheric world.
What is Fool Night About?
The story is set in a distant future where thick clouds permanently block the sun, plunging Earth into an eternal winter and night. Most of the planet’s vegetation has died, leading to a critical oxygen shortage. To survive, humanity created a drastic technology called “Transfloration.” This procedure implants seeds into the bodies of people near death, transforming them into plant-like organisms that produce oxygen.
The narrative follows Toshiro Kamiya, a young man living in extreme poverty. He works hard just to pay taxes and afford medication for his mentally ill mother. Desperate and without hope, he makes the difficult decision to undergo the Transfloration process. The story explores the terrifying consequences of his choice and the cruel reality of a world where human life has become a commodity.

Netflix has confirmed the main voice cast for the Japanese version of the anime:
