Episode 9 of From Season 4, titled “The Calm Before,” sets the stage for what promises to be an explosive season finale. The episode sees the residents of Fromville moving forward with a dangerous mission to retrieve the children’s bones from the underground tunnels, while the Man in Yellow works behind the scenes to sabotage their efforts. Here is a complete recap of everything that happened in the penultimate episode.
The Dangerous Plan Begins
The episode opens with Tabitha discussing the Man in Yellow’s return with Boyd. She reveals that he likely entered her house to take Ethan’s drawings, raising concerns that the talismans may no longer provide adequate protection. This pushes Boyd to accept that waiting for a perfect plan is no longer an option, and he decides the residents must move forward with their risky mission.
Jade and Tabitha believe they have finally discovered the way to save the children. The plan involves two teams working simultaneously: one team will enter the underground tunnels to retrieve the children’s bones, while another team removes the Bottle Tree above them to create an escape route. However, Victor receives a warning from the Boy in White that removing the Bottle Tree could lead to dangerous consequences.
The Man in Yellow’s Manipulation
The Man in Yellow, still disguised as Sophia, continues his campaign of deception throughout the episode. He approaches Clara to collect on an earlier arrangement, and the two create a blood pact that allows his influence to spread further. Clara then secretly adds her tainted blood to a drink and gives it to Fatima, claiming it is a family remedy.
Later that night, Fatima wakes up in severe pain. Her stomach cramps intensify, and she notices her hair falling out. Meanwhile, Sophia volunteers to help build the rope ladder for the mission but deliberately tries to sabotage it by cutting the rope discreetly.
Henry remains trapped by the Man in Yellow’s influence, experiencing visions of an ideal alternate reality. In these visions, people including Victor push him toward a disturbing solution: killing the real Victor to fully commit to the illusion.
A Major Revelation About the Man in Yellow
Elgin discovers an old photograph showing Sophia during a previous cycle in the town. He calmly confronts her, asking for an explanation. Sophia then reveals that she can only take the form of people who have died in Fromville. This revelation draws a direct parallel to Lost’s Man in Black, who could take on the forms of dead individuals on the island.
Before Elgin can react, Clara shuts the diner door, leaving his fate uncertain and Elgin trapped inside.
Tabitha and Jade Enter the Tunnels
Tabitha receives a vision from the ghostly children while sitting on the deck with Ethan. They point toward her, leading her to a new revelation: only she and Jade should enter the tunnels to retrieve the bones, as she believes the two figures shown on the talismans represent them. When Clara informs Sophia of this change, Sophia appears visibly concerned and angry, suggesting the adjustment could affect her larger plan.
At nightfall, Tabitha and Jade enter the tunnels armed with a talisman and a simple plastic barrier. Meanwhile, Boyd and the others prepare to remove the Bottle Tree. Tabitha and Jade manage to locate the bones hidden beneath a large stone and move the rock above them, but then find themselves surrounded by the monsters with nowhere to go.
