The first Game of Thrones movie now has an official working title. Warner Bros. announced Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest during their CinemaCon 2026 presentation in Las Vegas on April 14, 2026. The film will bring the story of Aegon I Targaryen, the original conqueror of Westeros, to the big screen.
The announcement came as part of the studio’s “2027 and beyond” slate, meaning audiences will have to wait a while before seeing dragons in theaters. Beau Willimon, known for his work on House of Cards and Andor, is writing the screenplay. The title could still change as development continues, but this marks a major step forward for the long-rumored movie project.
What Is Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest About?
The movie will focus on Aegon I Targaryen, the legendary figure who united the seven warring kingdoms of Westeros under a single ruler. He forged the Iron Throne by melting down the weapons of his defeated enemies using dragonfire from his beast Balerion, also known as the Black Dread.
Aegon ruled alongside his two sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, both of whom were also dragon riders. Together, they burned and conquered their way across the continent, establishing the Targaryen dynasty that would last for nearly 300 years. The story comes from George R. R. Martin’s book Fire and Blood, which chronicles the rises and falls of the various Targaryen kings.
This marks the first time Aegon’s conquest will be shown on screen. While the character has been mentioned many times in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, viewers have never actually seen him in action.
Who Is Writing the Game of Thrones Movie?
Beau Willimon is handling the screenplay. He served as the showrunner for House of Cards during its first four seasons, helping turn the political drama into a massive hit for Netflix. More recently, he wrote for Andor, the critically praised Star Wars series on Disney+.
Willimon also works as a producer on Severance season two for Apple TV. His background in sharp political storytelling fits well with the Game of Thrones universe, where power struggles and backstabbing are just as important as dragon battles. The writer has previously worked on films like Mary Queen of Scots and The Ides of March.
What Other Game of Thrones Content Is Coming?
The Game of Thrones universe continues to expand on television as well. House of the Dragon season three arrives this summer on HBO. The show follows the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, which takes place about 100 years before Daenerys Targaryen’s story.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which premiered in January 2026, has already been renewed for a second season. That series follows the adventures of a knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire Egg, who is actually a young Aegon V Targaryen. Season two is scheduled for 2027.

What to Expect From the First Game of Thrones Film
Reports suggest Warner Bros. wants the movie to feel as big as Dune in terms of scale. Expect massive battle sequences, plenty of dragon action, and the brutal political maneuvering that made the original series so popular. Since the story covers Aegon’s entire conquest, the film could show major events like the Field of Fire, where Aegon and his sisters burned four thousand soldiers using all three dragons.
The movie will also introduce audiences to characters never seen before on screen, including Aegon himself, his warrior sister Visenya, and the more gentle Rhaenys. Their three dragons—Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes—are the largest and most powerful ever known in Westeros.
For now, fans will have to wait for more details. The film sits somewhere on Warner Bros. 2027 and beyond release calendar, with no specific date attached yet. But the title reveal confirms that the long-discussed movie is actually happening.
