The CBS comedy Ghosts left viewers with a major question mark after the Season 5 finale. Fan-favorite ghost Pete (Richie Moriarty) disappeared into thin air while trying to save Woodstone Mansion. Now, showrunner Joe Port has confirmed how the show will handle this shocking moment when it returns.
Instead of picking up right where things left off, Ghosts Season 6 will begin with a time jump of several months. The season will launch with a one-hour Halloween special that moves the story forward past the events of the finale.
Season 5 Finale Left Pete’s Fate Unresolved
The two-part Season 5 finale, which aired on May 21, 2026, put Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) in a fight to save their home. An evil water company turned tech conglomerate bought a controlling stake in Woodstone and planned to tear it down for a data center.
To stop the demolition, the couple needed to prove the mansion was a historic landmark. The unlikely hero turned out to be Nancy (Betsy Sodaro), the basement ghost who usually talks about dirt and cholera. The writers revealed that Nancy was actually a runaway princess.
Jay and Pete traveled to London to find proof of Nancy’s royal past. But Pete has a ghost power that lets him leave the property for only a limited time. During the trip back, he started to disappear piece by piece. Right before reaching Woodstone, Pete vanished completely.
“This is something that we’ve touched upon, is Pete’s jeopardy when he’s gone from the property for too long and starts to disappear,” Port told Collider. “The few other times that he’s been worried about making it back, he’s made it back just in time. So, we were waiting for a moment to have him not safely make it back.”
Time Jump Changes How Season 6 Will Start
Unlike previous seasons that continued directly from the finale, Season 6 will skip ahead several months. The one-hour Halloween special will catch viewers up on what happened after Pete’s disappearance.
“We’re going to pick up several months after the finale and catch up with what’s been going on,” Port explained. “And catch up on what’s happening with Sam’s movie and what’s happening with the ghosts, and what has become of Pete, if anything. So, there’s a lot to divine.”
The Halloween special airs in late October 2026, followed by a holiday “Ghostmas” special in mid-December 2026. Both specials are one-hour episodes that serve as the official start of Season 6.
When to Expect Ghosts Season 6
Ghosts Season 6 follows a different schedule than previous years. CBS decided to hold the season for a midseason launch in early 2027. The network made this choice to give new comedy series Eternally Yours a better time slot in fall 2026.
Here is the release schedule:
- Late October 2026: One-hour Halloween special (season premiere)
- Mid-December 2026: One-hour holiday “Ghostmas” special
- Early 2027: Regular episodes of Season 6 begin airing weekly
The season will have 22 regular episodes plus the two hour-long specials. That means fans actually get more content than usual, just spread out differently.
The Cast Is Ready to Return
The full main cast is expected back for Season 6. This includes Rose McIver (Sam), Utkarsh Ambudkar (Jay), Richie Moriarty (Pete), Brandon Scott Jones (Isaac), Danielle Pinnock (Alberta), Rebecca Wisocy (Hetty), Asher Grodman (Trevor), Devan Chandler Long (Thorfinn), Román Zaragoza (Sasappis), and Sheila Carrasco (Flower).
Richie Moriarty, who plays Pete, admitted he does not know his character’s fate either. The writers were only three days into the Season 6 writers’ room when showrunners spoke to the press in late May 2026.
“Everyone, the whole cast is a little nervous, including myself,” Moriarty told Variety before the finale aired. “We’re five seasons into this show, and we haven’t yet lost any of the main eight ghosts. I think at a certain point, as hard as it may be, you do kind of have to lose someone to keep the stakes of the show feeling real.”

Joe Port and Joe Wiseman are not treating Pete’s disappearance as a permanent goodbye. Instead, they see it as a new mystery to explore.
“So, now we’re left in an interesting position, which is figuring out what that means and where did Pete go, and what will happen to him?” Port said. “So, it’s left us with a lot of fun questions.”
The Halloween special will directly address the cliffhanger. Wiseman confirmed that the specials are not standalone episodes. They are official parts of the season’s story.
“They are going to be specials, but they’re not going to be standalone,” Wiseman explained. “We are going to be addressing the Pete cliffhanger. We’re going to be addressing everything. It’s just going to be wrapped up into an hour-long Halloween and Christmas episode.”
