The King of the Monsters is coming to New York. Takashi Yamazaki‘s Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, will make its world premiere at the 64th New York Film Festival. The film screens as the Spotlight Gala presentation on September 26 at Alice Tully Hall. Yamazaki and key cast and crew members are expected to attend the premiere.
The festival, presented by Film at Lincoln Center in partnership with Rolex, runs from September 25 to October 12. Godzilla Minus Zero arrives in Japanese theaters on November 3 and hits North American screens on November 6 through distributor GKIDS.
The Story Continues in Post-War Japan
Set in 1949, two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One, the sequel follows the Shikishima family as they face a new catastrophe in post-World War II Japan. The original film told the story of Koichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot haunted by survivor’s guilt, as a devastated Japan confronted the emergence of Godzilla.
Ryunosuke Kamiki returns as Koichi Shikishima, with Minami Hamabe reprising her role as Noriko Oishi. Min Tanaka joins the cast for the sequel. Takashi Yamazaki returns as writer, director, and visual effects supervisor, the same role he held on the predecessor.
The festival describes the film as “an experience that demands the big screen, featuring even more astounding effects choreography than its predecessor” while keeping its “post-WWII Japan narrative at human eye level”.
From Oscar Winner to Festival Centerpiece
Godzilla Minus One, released in 2023, reimagined the iconic Japanese monster franchise and became a critical and commercial success. The film grossed over USD 110 million worldwide. At the 96th Academy Awards, it made history as the first Godzilla film to win an Oscar, taking home the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. Yamazaki became the first director since Stanley Kubrick to win the Best Visual Effects award in 1969.

The 64th New York Film Festival opens with James Gray’s Paper Tiger, features Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth! as the centerpiece, and closes with Ava DuVernay’s documentary 14th.
