Gong Hyo Jin is making her return to MBC after 15 years with the action drama ‘A Bona Fide Killer’ (also known as ‘Married Woman Killer’). The series follows a working mother who leads a dangerous double life as a legendary assassin known as “Kingfisher,” trying to balance her brutal profession with her family responsibilities.
The drama is based on a popular Kakao webtoon that has accumulated 180 million views and won the Grand Prize at the 2024 World Webtoon Festival. It tells the story of Yu Bo Na (played by Gong Hyo Jin), a seemingly ordinary manager of Sales Team 3 at Durumi Electronics who is secretly a one-shot, one-kill sniper eliminating criminals who have escaped the law.
After taking three years of parental leave, Yu Bo Na returns to work and resumes her dangerous double life. She must protect her family while carrying out secret missions as the legendary assassin “Kingfisher”.
What Makes ‘A Bona Fide Killer’ Different From Other Action Dramas
The show brings a fresh mix of action and family comedy. The main character is a devoted wife and mother in her 30s with a four-year-old daughter, but she is also a killer who takes down ruthless criminals. This contrast between her ordinary home life and her extraordinary profession creates the core appeal of the series.
The first poster for the drama captures this duality perfectly. It shows Yu Bo Na wearing an apron and cooking for her family with a gentle smile, but with a sniper rifle over her shoulder and a blade in her hand. The poster’s caption reads, “I’m pretty killer”.
Gong Hyo Jin shared a video on her social media on July 2 showing her training in Muay Thai for the action scenes. She wrote, “Physical training in preparation for Yu Bo-na’s action scenes”. Fans reacted positively to her dedication, with comments like “She always immerses herself completely once she starts a project” and “Kong Hyo-jin handling action scenes is promising”.
The Secret Team Behind the Assassin
Yu Bo Na is not working alone. She is part of Sales Team 3 at Durumi Electronics, which is actually a covert unit specializing in eliminating criminals. The team uses methods like sniper attacks, staged accidents, and poisonings. They refer to their targets as “clients” and their missions as “meetings” to keep their operations hidden.
The team members include:
- Kim Bong Pal (played by Sung Dong Il) – The team leader who specializes in staging accidents
- Ki Young Do (played by Moo Jin Sung) – A genius hacker nicknamed “Crazy Fingers”
- Bong Tae Min (played by Kim Nam Hee) – A weapons specialist
- Oh Hyun Nam (played by Ha Yu Ri) – A poisoning expert
- Go Young Gap (played by Heo Jae Ho) – A former doctor turned killer
- Yang Ye Sol (played by Kim Ga Hee) – An administrative clerk handling document forgery
Except for Sales Team 3, all other employees at Durumi Electronics are ordinary staff, so their double lives remain a complete secret.
The Husband Who Doesn’t Know His Wife’s Secret
Jung Jun Won plays Kwon Tae Sung, Yu Bo Na’s husband. He works as a reporter on a newspaper’s investigative team. He is described as a devoted husband and a doting father to their daughter.
The interesting twist is that Kwon Tae Sung once worked as the reporter exclusively assigned to cover “Kingfisher”. He gradually moves closer to uncovering the true identity of the mysterious assassin. This creates tension in the story as he gets closer to discovering that his own wife is the killer he has been chasing.
The Detective on the Hunt
Lee Sang Yi plays Lee Dong Jin, a detective in the Violent Crimes Unit. He understands the pain of crime victims better than anyone and chooses the path of legal judgment rather than vigilante justice. He relentlessly pursues Kingfisher with the belief that he must capture her.
Lee Sang Yi commented during the script reading, “Please pay attention to the relationship between Dong Jin and Kingfisher”. This suggests an interesting dynamic will develop between the detective and the assassin throughout the series.
Behind the Scenes – The Creative Team
The drama brings together a strong creative team. Director Yoon Jong Ho, known for ‘Lovely Runner’ and ‘Times’, is directing. Writer Kim Eun Hee, known for ‘Ghost Doctor’ and ‘Live Up to Your Name’, is writing the script.
The script reading brought together the full cast including Gong Hyo Jin, Jung Jun Won, Lee Sang Yi, Sung Dong Il, Moo Jin Sung, Lee Eun Saem, and Choi Woo Sung. From their first meeting, the cast showed strong chemistry, creating an atmosphere where cheerful laughter and tension coexist.
Gong Hyo Jin shared her thoughts at the script reading: “I will do my best to make ‘A Bona fide Killer’ a series that offers comfort and enjoyment to viewers”.
Jung Jun Won added, “I’ll do my best to contribute to making this a great production”.
Lee Sang Yi expressed excitement about working with the cast, saying, “I’m really looking forward to the chemistry between the actors”.
