He is calling out the glamorization of a violent and brutal history that the hit BBC series Peaky Blinders has accidentally created.
Chinn, who has spent 40 years researching the gangs of Birmingham, warns that the fictional drama is far removed from the ugly reality. He fears that many fans are turning real-life thugs into fashion icons, ignoring the suffering they caused.
The Dark Truth About the Real Peaky Blinders
The popular show portrays Cillian Murphy’s Tommy Shelby as a cool, stylish, and complex anti-hero. But according to Chinn, the actual men who were part of the Peaky Blinders gangs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were nothing like that.
Chinn’s great-grandfather, Edward Derrick, was a real Peaky Blinder. The historian grew up knowing the truth about him. “He was a violent, abusive, wife-beating, petty thief,” Chinn revealed in an interview . Derrick was arrested many times for violent acts, including attacking police officers and innocent people on the street .
The real gangs were not the sophisticated, horse-riding crime family seen on screen. They were poor, unskilled laborers and street traders. “They couldn’t afford fine clothes,” Chinn explained. He described them simply as “backstreet thugs” who bullied the decent, hardworking poor people they lived among .
A Worrying Cultural Phenomenon
The global success of Peaky Blinders has turned the gang’s aesthetic into a worldwide brand. Groups of fans dress in expensive suits and flat caps, mimicking the look of the Shelby family. This is exactly what concerns Professor Chinn.
“Because of the cultural approach so many people have taken, they’re ignoring the violence, the racism, the bullying, the sexual assaults of the real Peaky Blinders,” he said . He criticizes fans who turn the gang’s history into “just a fashion,” focusing on the hats and the suits while forgetting the real victims.
He finds it particularly worrying to see young men attracted to this “glamorized gangsterism” . Chinn questions whether modern street gangs would be admired in the same way, calling the trend a “dangerous” misunderstanding of history.
Drama vs. Reality: What the Show Gets Wrong
While Chinn acknowledges that Peaky Blinders is a “phenomenal international success” that has brought positive attention to Birmingham, he stresses that “the drama is not reality” . There are major historical inaccuracies that contribute to the false glorification.
The real Peaky Blinders gangs were active mostly in the 1890s, not the 1920s like in the show. By the time World War I started, the original gangs were largely gone . Furthermore, the show’s razor-blade-in-the-cap trick is a myth. Razor blades were luxury items at the time and wouldn’t have been wasted. Real gang members sometimes used hats with hard peaks to headbutt victims, but the slashing was a fictional invention .
Most importantly, figures like Tommy Shelby, Aunt Polly, and the Shelby family are completely fictional . They were created by writer Steven Knight, who based the show on stories his parents told him about the “well-dressed” gangsters of his hometown.
