The doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial faced a night of personal heartbreak and terrifying disaster. April 30, 2026, saw the return of ABC’s medical drama with Season 22 Episode 17, titled “Through the Fire.”
While the team treated a badly burned firefighter and an impaled artist, two major stories dominated the hour. Simone Griffin received devastating news about her fertility treatments. Meanwhile, Owen Hunt found himself trapped in a nightmare scenario, leaving his future at serious risk heading into the finale.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 17: Simone Faces Crushing IVF Setback
The pressure had been building on the hospital’s new class of surgeons. Jules Millin successfully completed her egg retrieval. For Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd) , the process did not go as planned.
Following her procedure, the doctors gave Simone difficult news. Her body did not produce enough viable eggs for the retrieval to work. The process was not a success. The medical team informed her that moving forward, it would be a very difficult process because of how her body reacts.
Simone tried to hide her sadness from her colleagues. Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) noticed something was off during a surgery. He checked on her, but she lied, saying she was fine. Later, he found her alone at a bar near the hospital. This time, she opened up about her fears and the failure of the procedure.
The two shared drinks and talked. The emotional moment led them to rekindle their physical relationship, ending the night together.
Trouble for Kwon and Bailey
Dr. Kwon faced major consequences for his actions. Earlier, he performed an illegal medical procedure on a patient. Bailey tried to hide the mistake to protect the hospital from lawsuits and government trouble.
Richard Webber figured out the truth. He confronted Bailey, but before she could explain, a severe emergency case arrived. Ben Warren pushed Bailey to come clean to Richard. When Richard finally learned that Kwon broke the rules, he fired him immediately.
Richard also suspended Bailey for her role in trying to cover up the incident. The episode made it clear that Webber has no patience for risky “cowboys” on his staff anymore.
Ben Races to Save Firefighter Maya Bishop
A major emergency brought the team together. A firefighter named Maya Bishop (Danielle Savre) arrived at the ER with severe burns and a broken leg. Maya is a former colleague of Ben’s from the Seattle Fire Department.
Ben suggested a risky surgery. He wanted to debride her burns and fix her broken leg at the same time. The team had to decide which injury to treat first to save her life. This marked the first appearance of a Station 19 character on the show since that series ended in 2024.
While treating Maya, Jules discovered the fire had destroyed the hotel room she booked for a private night with Winston. The couple still has not been physically intimate, and their plans were ruined.
Owen’s Apology Interrupted by Disaster
Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) was struggling with his home life. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) received a job offer to run a research program in Paris. When she told Owen the news, he reacted with anger. He felt she was leaving him and their family behind.
Later, Owen treated a patient impaled by a glass art sculpture. The patient reminded him to hold onto love. Owen realized he had been too harsh with Teddy. He picked up the phone to apologize.
Owen left Teddy a voicemail. “Teddy, I owe you an apology for last night. I had something I wanted to say, and your news kind of threw me. Let’s talk when I get in, if I ever get in. There’s a ton of traffic on this bridge…”
The call cut off suddenly. Teddy heard loud crashes and honking down the line. The Royer Bridge had collapsed. Owen’s car plunged into the water, and he was later shown unconscious as the vehicle filled with water.
Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) was also on the bridge. The preview for the finale shows Nick being wheeled into the hospital on a stretcher. Meredith Grey begs Bailey to help save him in surgery.
