The current season of Grey’s Anatomy is coming to a close with a finale that promises major changes at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Episode 18, titled ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’, serves as the season finale and marks the official exit of two veteran cast members.
The April 30 episode left viewers on the edge of their seats. Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) was caught in a bridge collapse, leaving his fate unknown. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) heard a terrifying voicemail of the crash. Meanwhile, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) fired Benson Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) for performing an illegal medical procedure without approval. This sets the stage for a dramatic finale next week.
Release Date and Streaming Details for the Season 22 Finale
Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Episode 18 will air on Thursday, May 7, 2026. It will broadcast during its regular time slot on ABC at 10:00 PM Eastern Time / 9:00 PM Central Time.
For viewers who prefer to stream, the episode will be available on Hulu starting Friday, May 8, 2026. Hulu subscriptions start at $12.99 per month. For international viewers, the episode will roll out on Disney+ and other regional platforms later in May, depending on the location. Season 22 is also expected to arrive on Netflix US in June 2026.
Two Major Exits Confirmed for the Finale
Back in March, ABC confirmed that Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt) and Kim Raver (Teddy Altman) are leaving the show in the season finale. McKidd joined the series in Season 5, while Raver joined in Season 6 before returning later. Their departure marks the end of a long-running chapter for the medical drama.
“While their story is coming to a close, this is never truly a goodbye,” said showrunner Meg Marinis in a statement about the actors’ departure.
Creator Shonda Rhimes also spoke about giving the characters a proper send-off. She mentioned that their love story has been a long journey and that she wanted to give viewers a meaningful ending for the pair.

What Happened in the Penultimate Episode
The episode on April 30, titled “When the Party’s Over,” set up multiple emergencies. Teddy received a job offer in Paris, which led to an argument with Owen. After the fight, Owen left her a voicemail apologizing. While leaving the message, he said he was stuck in traffic on a bridge. Viewers then heard the sound of a collision before the call dropped.
At the hospital, Richard Webber discovered that Kwan gave a cancer patient an experimental treatment that the FDA had not approved. Kwan tried to claim that Miranda Bailey approved the procedure, but Webber knew it was a lie. Webber fired Kwan on the spot.
How the Finale Connects to the Bridge Collapse
The finale title, “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” directly connects to the cliffhanger involving Owen. Teddy stares at her phone, unable to reach him. At the same time, the hospital begins preparing for an influx of trauma patients from the bridge disaster.
It remains unclear if Owen survives. The show has a history of killing off major characters during their exit. However, given that both actors announced their departures together, some fans believe the writers may let them leave Seattle for Paris together rather than dying. That outcome is not confirmed yet.
Kwan’s Firing and the Fallout
The firing of Harry Shum Jr.‘s character came as a surprise to many viewers. Kwan broke the rules to try to save a patient’s life, but the hospital administration did not see it as heroism. Richard called it a violation of trust and medical ethics.
It is unclear if Kwan will return for Season 23. Harry Shum Jr. has not commented publicly on his status with the show for a potential next season. For now, the character remains fired and not working at Grey Sloan.
