The sound of the wizarding world is getting a new voice. HBO has officially announced that celebrated composer Hans Zimmer and his company, Bleeding Fingers Music, will create the original musical score for the upcoming Harry Potter television series. The series is scheduled to debut on HBO and stream on HBO Max in 2027.
Zimmer will collaborate with Bleeding Fingers composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman on the project. In a joint statement, the team acknowledged the weight of the task, saying, “The musical legacy of Harry Potter is a touch point for composers everywhere and we are humbled to join such a remarkable team on a project of this magnitude”. They added that they hope their score will bring audiences closer to the magic while “honoring what has come before”.
The New Team Behind the Harry Potter Series Score
This marks a significant new chapter for the franchise’s music. The original film series featured scores by several renowned composers. John Williams created the iconic themes for the first three movies, including the instantly recognizable “Hedwig’s Theme”. He was followed by Patrick Doyle (Goblet of Fire), Nicholas Hooper (Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince), and Alexandre Desplat (Deathly Hallows).
For the new television adaptation, Zimmer brings a massive reputation. He is a two-time Academy Award winner for The Lion King and Dune, and his work on films like Gladiator, Inception, and The Dark Knight trilogy is globally famous. He is currently shortlisted for a Golden Globe for his score for the film F1.
He will not work alone. Bleeding Fingers Music is a collective of composers he co-founded over a decade ago. The company, which has won Emmy Awards and received Grammy and BAFTA nominations, operates on a collaborative model. Composers Kara Talve and Anže Rozman, who previously co-wrote music for the Prehistoric Planet series, will work directly with Zimmer on the Harry Potter score.
Balancing Legacy and a New Vision for Television
The composers face the unique challenge of honoring a beloved musical history while creating something fresh for a different format. The HBO series plans to adapt each of J.K. Rowling’s seven books into its own season, allowing for a more detailed exploration of the story than the films could. This long-form, prestige television approach requires a score that can evolve and expand over many more hours of storytelling.
The team’s statement directly addresses this balance, expressing deep respect for the existing legacy. It remains to be seen if familiar motifs like “Hedwig’s Theme” will appear in the new work. The goal, as stated, is to honor the past while crafting a new musical identity for this specific adaptation.
