The mystery surrounding who will play Lord Voldemort in the upcoming Harry Potter television series has been one of the biggest questions for fans. With the first trailer now out and filming already happening in the UK, everyone wanted to know if the Dark Lord had finally been cast. HBO top executive Casey Bloys has now given a direct and clear answer about the status of the iconic villain.

The new series, which is a fresh adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven books, already has its main trio and many of the Hogwarts professors. But the role of He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has remained empty, leading to many guesses and online rumors. Now, the head of HBO has stepped in to set the record straight.

HBO Boss Says No One Has Been Cast as Voldemort Yet

While talking to Variety to promote the launch of HBO Max in the UK, Casey Bloys was asked directly if the part of Voldemort had been filled. His answer was short and to the point. He said, “No, we have not.”

Bloys also warned fans not to believe the many rumors circulating on social media. He explained that people should not trust everything they read online about who is playing the character. “As a rule, I would say any rumors – don’t [believe them]. I don’t even know who we’re casting. I really don’t! I would take everything you read with a grain of salt.”

This news comes as a surprise to some, because the first season of the series is already in production. The story of the first book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, does involve Voldemort. He appears on the back of Professor Quirrell’s head, meaning the show will need an actor to either play that version of the character or provide a voice.

Why the Voldemort Casting Is So Important for the Series

The decision to wait on casting the Dark Lord makes sense for the production. In the original films, Ralph Fiennes did not appear as Voldemort until the fourth movie, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. However, the new television series has a different plan. It aims to cover one book per season, and the story requires the presence of Tom Riddle, the young version of Voldemort, in the second season based on The Chamber of Secrets.

Finding the right actor for Voldemort is one of the most important choices the producers have to make. The character is not just a simple villain. He is a complex figure with a dark history. The actor chosen will likely have to play the role for many years, as the series is expected to run for a full decade. This long-term commitment means HBO is taking its time to find the perfect person for the job.

Cillian Murphy, Paul Bettany, and Tilda Swinton Rumors Addressed

Over the past year, several big names have been linked to the role of Voldemort. These rumors got louder after Ralph Fiennes, the original movie Voldemort, said in an interview that Cillian Murphy would be a “very good choice.” This comment caused many fans to believe the Oppenheimer star was being considered.

But Cillian Murphy has now made his position very clear. In an interview with The Times, the actor said, “I’m categorically not. Can you make that the headline?” He also mentioned how hard it would be to follow Ralph Fiennes, calling him “an absolute acting legend.”

Another name that recently came up was Paul Bettany, known for playing Vision in the Marvel movies. Reports suggested HBO was looking at him for the part. But when asked by ScreenRant at the Saturn Awards, Bettany said he had not been contacted. “I haven’t heard anything about that,” he stated. “I mean, I’m a big fan of the IP and I’m a big fan of HBO, but nobody has called me up about it.”

There was also chatter about Tilda Swinton possibly playing a female version of the character. When asked about this by Variety, Casey Bloys dismissed the idea, saying he did not know where such rumors came from.
