The story behind Morgan Gillory and Ludo Radovic’s breakup on High Potential is more detailed than what their son Elliott was told, and showrunner Todd Harthan has confirmed the full story will be revealed. In a recent interview, Harthan explained the nature of the characters’ separation and shared plans for future episodes that will explore their past.
The topic came up in Season 2, Episode 9, “Under the Rug.” After Morgan receives flowers from another admirer, her son Elliott encourages Ludo to fight for her. Ludo then sits Elliott down for a heart-to-heart. He tells his son that he and Morgan still like each other and make a great team, but they realized they did not make a great couple.
โWe still like each other, and we still make a great team, and that is never going to change,โ Ludo told Elliott. โBut your mother and I realized we didn’t make a great couple. No one did anything wrong. We just move at very different speeds.โ
The Showrunner’s Insight on Morgan and Ludo’s Relationship
Todd Harthan confirmed that Ludo gave his son an abridged, child-friendly version of events. The full story is more complex.
โIt is more complicated, but it was complicated with mutual respect and understanding, and that’s why their relationship post-breakup works so well,โ Harthan stated. โAny breakup between people with two children is always going to be messy, but it was messy without ever being disrespectful or hurtful.โ
Harthan explained that the writers did not want to burden young Elliott with every detail. However, those details could be explored in a future episode focused more on the adult relationship than a child’s point of view. The showrunner also noted that the writers’ room has had spirited debates about one key detail: which person decided to end the relationship. Harthan said the show has not officially decided, but he has his own vote and believes the question will be answered later.
How the Episode Connected to Morgan’s Father
Episode 9 also featured a storyline that touched on Morgan’s unresolved issues with her father. While working a case, Morgan had to protect the callous CEO of a company. The man criticized her, saying her “chaos act” was a cover for a lack of self-discipline and that she would never accomplish anything.
The criticism deeply affected Morgan. Harthan explained that it reminded her of her father’s disapproval. He described the moment as a “little appetizer” into Morgan’s difficult relationship with her father.
โAs tough, smart, and resilient as Morgan is, the judgment or disappointment of a father is something that always lives very close to the surface,โ Harthan said. For Morgan, the core issue is โdisappointment that her father didn’t love her unconditionally.โ
Harthan confirmed that Morgan’s father will be introduced in the series, but the creative team is taking time to ensure the character is developed correctly before casting an actor for the important role.
