Hope has officially arrived in U.S. theaters, and the film’s cliffhanger ending has sparked a wave of questions among moviegoers. Director Na Hong-jin and star Hwang Jung-min are now speaking openly about what that final scene means and whether a sequel will ever happen.
The South Korean sci-fi epic, which debuted at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, follows a small coastal village near the Korean Demilitarized Zone as it comes under attack from an unknown alien force. The film has already made history as South Korea’s most expensive movie ever produced, with a budget reportedly approaching 100 billion won (approximately US$74.3 million).
What Happens at the End of Hope
The final act of Hope takes a sharp turn that caught many viewers off guard. After police chief Bum-seok (Hwang Jung-min) and his team battle a massive alien creature, the story reveals that the monster they killed was actually a mother protecting her offspring. The situation escalates when rookie officer Sung-ae (Hoyeon) learns from a witness that three more adult aliens are still at large.
Meanwhile, Sung-ki (Zo In-sung) and his hunting group stumble upon an alien spaceship in the forest. They discover the ship had been carrying infant aliens, but the hunters are attacked by the adult aliens, and a brutal massacre follows. Sung-ki survives by fleeing on horseback and manages to destroy one alien before being thrown from a police car.
A mid-credits scene confirms that Sung-ki miraculously survived his brush with death.
The film then cuts to the aliens themselves, revealing Empress J’aur (Alicia Vikander) and her companions as they mourn the loss of their young. The movie ends on an unresolved note, with the alien characters facing a moment of reckoning while the human survivors grapple with the aftermath of the attack.
Na Hong-jin Explains That Final Scene
Director Na Hong-jin is clear that he does not see the ending as ambiguous. In an interview with ScreenRant, he explained that the film concludes with two very distinct perspectives: the assailants (the humans) and the victims (the aliens).
“By the end of the film, we very clearly see two sides: the assailants versus the victims. The assailants, who are the humans, have their final say and perspective. And then the victims also get a chance to have their final conversation and convey their perspective,” Na said.
The director added that the human characters express confusion and a dawning awareness of what they have done, while the alien characters convey a sense of maintaining hope and moving forward despite their tragedy.
“Because we got these clear, opposing sides of the story, I don’t think it’s ambiguous. In my opinion, it’s an adequate ending for the film,” Na stated.
Will There Be a Hope Sequel
Na Hong-jin has already written a script for a potential sequel, but he is not rushing to make it. During the Cannes Film Festival press conference, the director confirmed that a sequel script exists.
“I think you can readily imagine this sequel. And there’s a script that’s already been done that I’d like to shoot. So if I have the opportunity, I would indeed make a sequel if possible,” Na said.
The original screenplay for Hope was significantly longer and took place entirely over a single day. Na ultimately decided to “chop the script in half,” with the first half becoming the film that is now in theaters.
The director has also indicated that a sequel would shift its focus toward the aliens’ perspective. In an interview with The Playlist, Na explained that he wants to explore the alien characters’ world more deeply, which is why he persuaded Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender, and Taylor Russell to take on their roles.
“I sort of hoped I could create a whole world around them. That’s why I convinced them to work with me,” Na said.
However, Na has also stated that Hope works as a standalone story. He told ScreenRant that while he could tell the full story across one or two more films, the current movie “might be enough” without additional installments.
“Since I just finished doing a massive project like this, I don’t really have the desire to jump straight into the sequel right this second,” Na told ScreenRant.
The director has mentioned that he plans to make a darker, bloodier film before returning to the Hope universe.
Hwang Jung-min on the Possibility of More Hope Films
Lead actor Hwang Jung-min, who plays police chief Bum-seok, has shared his own thoughts on a potential sequel. At Cannes, he told Deadline that the idea of continuing the story was one of the reasons he signed onto the project in the first place.
“I thought maybe I would be doing this job for a longer time,” Hwang said.
The actor’s enthusiasm reflects the collaborative spirit behind the film’s production, with Na having assembled a blend of Korean and Hollywood talent for the project.
Cast and Release Details
Hope brings together a notable ensemble cast. Hwang Jung-min leads as Bum-seok, with Zo In-sung as his hunter cousin Sung-ki and Hoyeon (known for Squid Game) as rookie officer Sung-ae. The alien characters are portrayed through motion capture by Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.
The film released in U.S. theaters on September 9, 2026, through indie distributor Neon. It is also set to arrive in Indian cinemas on September 25, 2026, distributed by Star Entertainment, with releases in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Korean.
Hope has already achieved strong box office numbers in South Korea, recording 1.5 million admissions during its opening weekend and grossing US$11.3 million. The film has also secured one of the widest U.S. releases for a Korean-language title since Parasite.
