Marvel Comics fans are about to meet a powerful new hero on screen. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will star as Simon Williams, also known as Wonder Man, in a new series coming to Disney+. Before the show arrives, here is a detailed look at where his abilities come from and what he can do.
The Origin of an Unlikely Hero
Simon Williams was not born a hero. He was the son of a wealthy industrialist named Sanford Williams. After his father died, Simon took over the family munitions company, Williams Innovations. The business struggled to compete with its main rival, Stark Industries. In a desperate attempt to save the company, Simon committed fraud and was caught embezzling funds.
While facing prison, Simon was approached by the villain Baron Heinrich Zemo. Zemo offered him a way out: become a test subject for a powerful experiment. Simon agreed and underwent Zemo’s “ionic ray” treatment. This painful process fundamentally changed his body, granting him incredible superhuman abilities. Zemo named him Wonder Man and ordered him to infiltrate and betray the Avengers. However, after spending time with the heroes, Simon’s conscience took over. He turned against Zemo to save the Avengers, an act that seemingly cost him his life. He did not die but entered a deep, death-like coma as his body finished transforming.
The Ionic Energy That Powers Wonder Man
Wonder Man’s entire power set comes from one source: ionic energy. Baron Zemo’s experiment transformed Simon Williams from a normal human into a being whose body is composed of and powered by this potent energy. This ionic energy physiology is the key to understanding all of his abilities.
Because he is a being of energy, his body operates very differently from a human’s. He does not need food, water, sleep, or even air to survive. His ionic form also makes him immune to things that affect biological life. For instance, he cannot be infected by alien symbiotes like Venom because he lacks the biological tissue they need to bond with. His body does not age in a normal way, granting him a form of effective immortality.
Superhuman Strength and Physical Power
Wonder Man is one of the physically strongest heroes in the Marvel Universe. Official sources describe his strength class as being “in excess of 100 tons,” meaning he can lift objects weighing more than that with ease. This places him in the same tier as powerhouses like Thor and the Hulk. He has performed feats such as toppling a 60-foot tall opponent and going toe-to-toe with the Red Hulk.
His strength is matched by incredible durability. His ionic body makes him virtually invulnerable to conventional injury. He can withstand extreme forces, high-caliber gunfire, and powerful energy blasts without being harmed. If he does sustain damage, his ionic form allows for rapid regenerative healing, repairing injuries that would be fatal to others.
Flight, Speed, and Enhanced Senses
Beyond raw strength, Wonder Man possesses other major abilities that make him a versatile hero.
- Flight: He can fly at speeds exceeding 700 miles per hour. He initially used a jetpack powered by his own ionic energy but later learned to fly without any mechanical aid.
- Super Speed and Agility: His reflexes, agility, and running speed are all enhanced to superhuman levels, allowing him to move with blurring speed.
- Enhanced Vision and Hearing: His senses extend beyond human limits. His eyesight can perceive energies outside the normal visible spectrum, and his hearing is far more acute. His eyes typically glow with shifting spots of ionic energy.
Energy Manipulation and Extra Abilities
In addition to his physical powers, Wonder Man can manipulate the ionic energy within him. He can project this energy as powerful blasts from his eyes or hands. At times, when his energy is unstable or he is under great stress, he has demonstrated even more extraordinary abilities. These have included:
- Growing to a giant size.
- Altering his physical appearance.
- Teleporting.
- Creating explosive discharges of energy.
It is important to note that he does not always have full control or constant access to these extra abilities; they often fluctuate based on his condition or the story.
Skills and Training: More Than Just Power
Simon Williams is much more than a collection of powers. He is a skilled and intelligent hero.
- Martial Arts Expert: He received formal combat training from Captain America himself, learning technique and discipline to make the most of his strength.
- Stuntman and Actor: His civilian career as a Hollywood stuntman and actor honed his agility, coordination, and ability to perform under pressure. This background could also make him effective at undercover work.
- Genius Intellect: Simon is a gifted intellectual with an advanced degree in electrical engineering. He successfully ran a major technology company before his transformation.
Weaknesses and Internal Conflicts
Despite his immense power, Wonder Man has notable struggles. His greatest challenges are often psychological. After his first “death,” he developed a powerful fear of dying again, which sometimes caused him to freeze in life-threatening battles. He has also been a deeply conflicted hero, occasionally becoming disillusioned with the Avengers and even forming teams like the Revengers to oppose them.
His powers can also be unstable. Strong emotions like anger can sometimes cause unpredictable surges in his ionic energy. Furthermore, because his body is no longer fully biological, there are personal trade-offs, such as the inability to have children in a traditional way.

Wonder Man’s Role in the Upcoming MCU Series
The live-action Wonder Man series will bring this complex hero to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show is created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, who also serves as showrunner. It will be released under the Marvel Spotlight banner, which focuses on character-driven stories.
The series is described as a satirical look at Hollywood within the MCU. It follows Simon Williams (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) as a struggling actor. He meets Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley), the failed actor who once played the Mandarin. Together, they learn that a legendary director named Von Kovak (Zlatko Buriฤ) is remaking a superhero film called Wonder Man and compete for the life-changing lead role.
“He is incredibly powerful in a way that even he is not fully aware of,” said showrunner Andrew Guest about Simon Williams. Executive producer Brian Gay added that the character “doesn’t even know the extent of what his powers are.”
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II explained that in the world of the show, having superpowers is looked down upon in Hollywood. His character hides his abilities because he simply wants to be a respected actor. The cast also includes Demetrius Grosse as Simon’s brother, Eric Williams, and Ed Harris as Simon’s agent, Neal Saroyan.
All episodes of Wonder Man will be available to stream on Disney+ starting January 27, 2026.
