Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi won the top prize at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival for his movie It Was Just an Accident. The film is a revenge thriller that criticizes oppression in Iran. Panahi has faced arrests and bans in his home country for his work.

The Palme d’Or was handed to Panahi by actress Cate Blanchett. The crowd gave him a long standing ovation. This is his first Cannes win, completing his collection of top awards from Berlin, Venice, and Cannes.

Panahi dedicated the award to all artists forced to leave Iran. He hopes they can return to make films freely. The movie tells the story of a man who kidnaps someone he believes tortured him in prison. It mixes dark humor with serious themes.

The festival faced a power outage on its last day, but the show went on. Other winners included Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value (Grand Prix) and Wagner Moura (Best Actor for The Secret Agent).

What Is It Was Just an Accident About?

The film follows Vahid, a former prisoner who kidnaps a man he thinks was his torturer. He gathers other survivors to decide whether to kill or forgive him. The story is inspired by Panahi’s own jail experiences.

Panahi was banned from filmmaking for 20 years in Iran but kept making movies secretly. He was also barred from leaving the country until 2023. His return to Cannes after 22 years was emotional.

“Let’s put all the problems, all the differences aside; the most important thing right now is our country and our country’s freedom.”

The movie has been praised for its bold storytelling. Critics call it a powerful mix of drama and political commentary. It is only the second Iranian film to win the Palme d’Or after Taste of Cherry in 1997.

Panahi’s Long Struggle Against Censorship

Panahi has been arrested multiple times in Iran. His films were banned, and he was placed under a travel ban for over 15 years. Despite this, he kept making films, some secretly inside Iran.

In 2010, he was given a 20-year filmmaking ban for “propagandizing against the government.” He ignored it and made award-winning movies like Taxi (2015) and The Circle (2000). His latest film is his first since being released from prison in 2023.

“Art mobilizes the creative energy of the most precious, most alive part of us. A force that transforms darkness into forgiveness, hope and new life.”Jury President Juliette Binoche

The win marks the sixth straight year that Neon, the film’s U.S. distributor, backed the Palme d’Or winner. Previous winners include Parasite and Anatomy of a Fall.

Festival Challenges and Highlights

A power outage hit Cannes on the final day, possibly due to sabotage. The festival used backup generators to keep events running. Earlier, U.S. tariffs on foreign films were a hot topic among directors.

Controversies included a gala for Kevin Spacey and an actor banned from the red carpet. Despite this, the festival was seen as one of the strongest in years.
