DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has shut down rumors that The Batman 2 starring Robert Pattinson is being canceled. He confirmed the sequel remains a top priority and teased the script will arrive soon.
Gunn shared the update during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, saying, โWhat Mattโs doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary. Weโre supposed to see that script shortly, and I canโt wait.โ This directly addresses speculation that the film was axed due to delays and DCโs new universe plans.
The Batman 2 was first announced in 2022 but faced multiple delays. Its release date moved from October 2026 to October 1, 2027. Gunn defended the wait, pointing out that long gaps between sequels are common in Hollywood.
โTo be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,โ he said on social media. โ7 years between โAlienโ and โAliens.โ 14 years between โIncredibles.โ 36 years between โTop Guns.โโ He added that director Matt Reeves is focused on making the best film possible, not rushing production.
Robert Pattinson, who plays Batman, joked about the delay during promotions for his film Mickey 17. โI started out as young Batman and Iโm going to be f—ing old Batman by the sequel,โ he told Variety. โIโm 38. Iโm old.โ Despite the humor, he confirmed filming should start by late 2025.
The sequel will continue the story from The Batman (2022), which earned $772 million worldwide. It will also connect to the HBO Max series The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell. While plot details are secret, Pattinson teased, โI know what itโs about but I canโt tell anyone. Itโs very cool. Itโs very exciting.โ
Gunn clarified that The Batman 2 exists outside the new DC Universe, which will introduce its own Batman in The Brave and the Bold. Some fans wanted Pattinsonโs version to join the DCU, but Gunn dismissed the idea, saying, โโAllโ would seem to be pushing it,โ when asked about fan demand.
Reeves is still directing, and key cast members like Andy Serkis (Alfred) and Jeffrey Wright (Jim Gordon) are expected to return. A recent report from TheWrap said Reeves has been sending script pages for months, with a full draft expected soon.
The first film introduced Barry Keoghan as the Joker, but itโs unclear if heโll appear in the sequel. A fan-made concept trailer suggested Penguin and Joker as villains, but DC has not confirmed this.
Gunn stressed that no DC film starts production without a finished script. โIt is hard enough making a good movie with a good script,โ he said. โItโs almost impossible making a movie with a script that youโre writing on the run.โ
