The big One Chicago crossover event that aired on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, brought back two beloved faces for a high-stakes emergency. But the moment everyone talked about the next day was the quiet conversation between Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). After years apart and a painful divorce, the former couple finally came face to face. They did not ride off into the sunset together, but they did something just as important. They apologized. And then, they went to get a drink .
The three-hour event, titled “Reckoning,” connected Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, and Chicago P.D. in a story about a deadly chemical attack on a commercial airplane. While the plot involved saving the city from a madman, the emotional core for long-time P.D. viewers was watching Upton and Halstead navigate their broken history while working the same case .
The Scene That Made Fans Emotional
For those who missed it, the reunion did not happen right away. Upton, who now works for the FBI out of Detroit, came to Chicago because she suspected her ex-husband was in trouble during a drug bust in Bolivia. Halstead, still working with the Army, also ended up in Chicago on the trail of the same case. Throughout the night, they worked side-by-side, falling back into their old rhythm as partners despite the obvious tension .
The big moment came at the end of the Chicago P.D. hour. As Upton was getting ready to leave, Halstead stopped her.
“Hailey, I stayed to work this case because you were here,” he admitted.
“I came here because you were here,” she replied, before wishing him well and trying to walk away .
That is when Halstead finally said the words fans had waited years to hear. “Hailey, I’m sorry,” he blurted out. When she asked what for, he opened up completely. “All of it. I lost myself here on this team, this city, and I’m sorry I couldn’t find my way back. Sorry for all the wrong I did. All of it. I’m sorry that I lost you” .
Upton paused. “I’m sorry too,” she said softly. After a moment, she asked him what time his flight was. When he said he didn’t care, she smiled and asked the question that broke the internet: “Want to get a drink?” He said yes, and they walked off together .
What the Actors Say Really Happened After
So did they get back together? According to the actors themselves, it is not that simple. Tracy Spiridakos told PEOPLE that the scene was intentionally left open-ended.
“I think they had a couple drinks, and I think it opened the door. But Hailey is pretty closed-off, and everything that happened was so hurtful for her that I think it was a drink. It was a conversation, and I think it opened the door to further conversations. But I don’t think it was a, ‘Okay. All is forgiven.’ For her, it would take a very long time to find that trust again” .
Jesse Lee Soffer had a slightly different take, but agreed there is room for more story. He joked that one of the producers on set was convinced, “They went home together. Don’t you even kid yourself.” But Spiridakos laughed and pushed back, saying, “No, Hailey’s angry!” .
In an interview with NBC Insider, Spiridakos explained that the history between them goes deeper than just romance.
“She was quite hurt by how things were left off, but there is such a big history, even outside of the romantic relationship that they were in. They were partners for such a long time and very good friends. I think this last moment opened the door to more conversations” .
The Showrunner Explains the Meaning of That Ending
Gwen Sigan, the showrunner for Chicago P.D., made it clear that this was not meant to be a full reconciliation, but a hopeful beginning. Speaking to TVLine, she explained the thought process behind the scene.
“They have a lot of conversations to be had still, but we liked the idea of a hopeful sort of opening for the two of them. There’s a lot of possibility in that” .
She added that both characters have changed since they left Chicago.
“They’ve also been out of Chicago long enough that they’ve done other things and learned how to be, I would say, a bit healthier than they were when they were on the show. Because they were different, they were able to speak about things in a different way” .
Sigan also told Parade that the apology scene was significant because Halstead took full responsibility.
“I think a lot of the root of their problems was something that they both caused. So, I think it’s showing that the two of them are in a better place, that they can speak like that because a couple of years ago, I don’t think they could have, and that there’s hope for them” .
When asked directly if the door is open for them to return again, Sigan kept it simple: “The door is always open” .
What Happened in the Rest of the Crossover
While Upstead got the happy(ish) ending, other characters faced much darker outcomes. The crisis was caused by a man named Tommy Maher, who was badly burned as a child in a fire that killed his family. That fire happened years ago when Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) asked the fire department to delay an inspection so he could catch a criminal. The fire killed 22 people, and Maher spent his life seeking revenge .
In the present day, Maher released a nerve agent on a plane, killing all 188 passengers. When first responders went on board, they were also exposed. Firefighter Macy, the first graduate of Stella Kidd‘s Girls on Fire program, died from the exposure, which will have major fallout for Kidd in upcoming episodes .
Chief Dom Pascal (Dermot Mulroney) defied FBI orders to enter a burning apartment and find the antidote. He succeeded but was arrested. While he was released by the end of the episode, a text from his boss suggested he is not out of trouble. This aligns with news that Mulroney is taking a hiatus from the show .
On Chicago Med, Dean Archer (Steven Weber) and Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) clashed over her decision to treat a pregnant patient while exposed to the toxin, putting their unborn baby at risk. Showrunner Allen MacDonald confirmed this will lead to more conflict as they navigate their feelings for each other .
A Key Moment Between Halstead and Voight
Another small but important scene happened between Halstead and Voight. After learning the truth about Voight’s role in the old fire, Halstead looked at his former boss and said, “You’re different” .
Gwen Sigan explained why that line matters.
“When Halstead left, maybe three or four years ago, Voight was in a very different place. So much of this episode was about looking at your past and taking responsibility and ownership for things. That’s not the most Voight-ian thing to do. So for Halstead, he sees that Voight is now thinking about things and is actually affected by itโand that’s new” .
It was a quiet recognition that time has passed and people have changed, setting the stage for Voight’s continued character development this season.

Will We See Upstead Again?
For now, the fate of Upton and Halstead remains with the fans to imagine. The showrunners and actors have all emphasized that the door is open, but no concrete plans have been announced for more appearances. Spiridakos left the show in May 2024, and Soffer left in October 2022. Their return for the crossover was a special gift for fans who never got closure .
Whether they had one drink or many, the important thing is that they finally talked. After years of silence and hurt, Jay Halstead apologized. Hailey Upton listened. And for the first time in a long time, there is a possibility that these two might find their way back to each other.
