Jennifer Lawrence shared a humorous and relatable text exchange with her friend Emma Stone after this year’s Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations were announced. The playful moment occurred on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, during an event in New York, showing their long-running and friendly rivalry.
On the morning the nominations were released, Emma Stone received a nod for her leading role in the dark sci-fi drama “Bugonia,” directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. Jennifer Lawrence, who stars in the psychological drama “Die My Love,” was not nominated. Their immediate reaction was not one of private disappointment but a public, joking exchange in a group chat they share with friends.
The Playful Group Chat Exchange
During a conversation with host Josh Horowitz at New York’s 92NY venue, Lawrence recounted the text conversation that followed the SAG nomination announcement.
“We’re in a group chat and she got nominated for a SAG today and I did not,” Lawrence told the audience. “I wrote ‘WHAT!’ and all her friends were like ‘Congratulations Emma’ and I just do a sad face”.
Lawrence kept the joke going throughout the day, teasing Stone whenever she tried to speak. “Every time she tries to talk today, I’m like ‘Why are you not saying sorry,’” Lawrence joked. She then summed up their years of friendship and competition with a signature blend of humor and admiration: “She’s been beating me for decades but it’s an honor”.
A Friendly Rivalry Spanning Years
The dynamic between Lawrence and Stone is a unique one in Hollywood. Both actresses rose to fame around the same time in the early 2010s and have won Academy Awards at a young age. They are often discussed together, but have rarely been direct competitors in the same awards categories in a given season.
Lawrence mentioned that they have frequently been up for the same roles over the years. She specifically recalled really wanting a part that Stone ultimately got. “The one that I wanted that she got was Easy A,” Lawrence admitted. “I was nuts for Easy A — and really should have gotten it, right?… It would have been great”.
Despite the joking rivalry, their support for each other is clear. Lawrence was the one who presented the Oscar to Stone when she won her second Academy Award in 2024.
Current Awards Season Status
