The newest story in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, is winning over fans and critics. Since starting in September 2025, this short-term serialized manga has sparked positive discussions on social media. Many longtime fans are now saying it could be creator Gege Akutami‘s best work so far.

The series acts as a follow-up to the original story, but it introduces a new era and a fresh cast of characters. A key change this time is that Akutami is focusing only on writing, while the art is handled by Yuji Iwasaki. Fans note that this partnership and the shorter format have resulted in a story with better pacing and more character development.

A New Story Decades Later

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is set 68 years after the events of the Culling Game arc from the original series. The story takes place in 2086 and follows two main jujutsu sorcerers: Yuka Okkotsu and Tsurugi Okkotsu. They are the grandchildren of the original series characters, Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zen’in.

The jujutsu world faces a new threat with the arrival of an alien race called the Simurians. One of the first Simurians introduced is Maru, an inspector who ends up working with Yuka and Tsurugi. This mix of jujutsu sorcery and sci-fi elements has been praised as a daring and refreshing move for the series.

Why Fans Are Praising the New Series

Reactions on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit have been overwhelmingly positive. Many fans feel that Modulo has successfully addressed common criticisms of the original Jujutsu Kaisen.

A popular opinion on social media is that the series shows a more focused side of Gege Akutami’s storytelling. One fan posted on X, calling the series “peak Akutami.” This sentiment is shared by many, with one Reddit user stating, “JJK Modulo ch. 7 and JJK ch. 265 are the best written chapters Gege has ever done.”

A major point of praise is the series’ improved pacing. Fans note that, compared to the original, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo spends more time on character interactions and downtime. This shift allows for stronger emotional connections to the new cast. The shorter planned run of approximately six months also means the story is more streamlined, avoiding long, dragging arcs.

Introducing the New Generation

The new cast of characters is a big part of what makes Modulo feel both fresh and connected to the world fans love.

Yuka Okkotsu is a 16-year-old sorcerer who was very close to her grandfather, Yuta. He gave her his precious ring, a memento of Rika, but it was later given to her brother. Yuka is determined to prove her worth and get the ring back. She is a kind but fiercely competitive person, who is also dealing with a personal health challenge.

Her brother, Tsurugi Okkotsu, is 17 years old. Unlike his sister, he was born with a Heavenly Restriction, meaning he has no cursed energy. However, like his great-aunt Maki, he possesses incredible physical prowess and is a master of cursed tools. He seeks recognition from the powerful Gojo Clan.

The alien inspector, Maru, is a gentle-hearted Simurian who wants peaceful coexistence between his people and humans. He has a unique ability that allows him to warp reality in a localized area. His relationship with his hostile twin brother, Cross, adds a layer of tension to the story.

A Confident Debut and Bright Future

The strong confidence in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo was clear from its debut. It premiered with a 54-page, full-color chapter on the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump. The series is planned to run for about six months, which will likely fill three volumes.

The decision for Akutami to work solely as the writer is seen by many fans as a key factor in the story’s tight narrative. With Iwasaki handling the artwork, Akutami can concentrate fully on plot and character development. This division of labor appears to be playing to both of their strengths.

One fan noted online that “compared to the original series’ heavy hype and aura-moment focus, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo spends more time on downtime and character interaction.”

The series successfully balances respect for the original Jujutsu Kaisen world with innovative new ideas. It maintains the core concepts of cursed energy while introducing a new era, new characters, and even alien life. This has resulted in a project that feels both familiar and excitingly new. With its strong start, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is not just overcoming criticismโ€”it’s setting a new standard for what a sequel can be.
