Plot Overview
The movie picks up decades after the original Karate Kid film, which debuted in 1984. Ralph Macchio, now 63, returns as Daniel LaRusso, the once-bullied teenager turned skilled martial artist. Jackie Chan also returns as the wise and supportive kung fu master Mr. Han, a character first introduced in the 2010 reboot of the franchise.
In this latest chapter, a kung fu prodigy, Li Fong (played by Ben Wang, 24), faces a difficult challenge after a tragic family event forces him to leave his home in Beijing and move to New York City with his mother. Li, struggling to cope with his past, finds it difficult to adapt to his new life and fit in with his peers. Despite his desire for peace, conflict seems to follow him, and he eventually finds himself in a karate competition where his skills alone are not enough.
The Role of Daniel LaRusso
Liโs mentor, Mr. Han, realizes that the young fighter needs more than just physical training to succeed. Seeking help, Mr. Han enlists the guidance of Daniel LaRusso, a character known for his own journey as a karate student under the tutelage of Mr. Miyagi (the late Pat Morita). Together, they combine their martial arts styles to teach Li a unique approach to fighting, leading to a dramatic martial arts showdown. This marks a powerful collaboration of the old and new guard in the martial arts world.
Fresh Faces and Familiar Favorites
In addition to Macchio and Chan, the movie also features several prominent cast members, including Joshua Jackson, Sadie Stanley, and Ming-Na Wen. The new cast members add fresh energy to the film, with Ben Wang taking center stage as the next generation of martial artist.
Behind the Scenes
Karate Kid: Legends is directed by Jonathan Entwistle, known for his work on the Netflix series The End of the F*ing World**. The screenplay was written by Rob Lieber, and Karen Rosenfelt serves as the producer. This collaboration brings together experienced storytellers with a fresh vision for the iconic franchise.
Macchio, who has remained involved with the Karate Kid universe through the popular Netflix series Cobra Kai, spoke briefly about his experience filming the sequel. He explained how he transitioned directly from the final season of Cobra Kai to filming Karate Kid: Legends. “I went straight from Cobra Kai to Montreal and shot a couple of weeks straight,” he shared, expressing his excitement about continuing Daniel’s journey.
Upcoming for the Franchise
The movie arrives in theaters after the conclusion of Cobra Kai, a series that reignited the rivalry between Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence (played by William Zabka). The final season of Cobra Kai will wrap up the saga, giving fans a new chapter to look forward to with Karate Kid: Legends.
While Macchio refrained from revealing specific details about the plot, he emphasized the importance of staying true to Daniel LaRussoโs character. “Itโs about carrying the honesty and truth of Daniel LaRusso and what Miyagi meant to him,” Macchio explained.
