The ongoing public conflict between former reality TV star Kate Gosselin and her estranged son Collin Gosselin has reached a new level of intensity. Just weeks before the release of Collin’s explosive memoir, Kate commented on a social media post, seemingly calling her son “mentally ill” as she responded to a follower’s support.
The tension has been building since Collin, now 22, announced his upcoming book, In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood, which is set to hit shelves on October 13. The memoir promises to expose allegations of abuse during his childhood, including claims that he was held in a basement room and given strong antipsychotic medication at a young age.
Kate Gosselin’s TikTok Response Sparks Backlash
Kate Gosselin, 51, took to TikTok on June 29 to share a routine update about her rescue dog, Koda. In the comment section, a follower expressed sympathy for the reality star, saying they understood what it was like to be “constantly disparaged and lied about” by an adult child with a “skewed version of their childhood”.
Kate responded directly to the comment, writing, “Thank you! YOU understand. Sadly, only parents who have a mentally ill child understand!” She continued, saying it’s “so tough” and that she’s “learning that [people] have NO ability to understand unless they’ve been through it themselves”.
The comment was widely interpreted as a direct reference to Collin, who has been making public allegations against his mother for years. This marks one of the few times Kate has publicly addressed the situation in her own words, rather than through representatives.
Collin Gosselin Fires Back with Diary Allegations
Collin quickly responded to his mother’s comments. On his Instagram Stories, he shared a post claiming, “Never forget the fact that my mom would write in her diary how she ‘had to pray to God to stop hitting me’ (this was while I was 2 years old by the way)”.
He added, “And this is why using my voice to put these things in the light is so important,” linking the new allegation to the upcoming release of his memoir.
This is not the first time Collin has made serious accusations against his mother. In previous interviews, he alleged that Kate would zip-tie his hands and feet and lock him in a basement room. He has also claimed that she sent him to a behavioral institution where he remained for nearly two years.
Collin Says He Has Evidence to Back Up Claims
The book’s description reveals the depth of the allegations Collin plans to make. According to the publisher, the memoir will share “the never-before-told story of how [Collin] escaped and found his way back from the dark”.
“Collin is finally sharing the truth about being held down, the basement cell where he was hidden for years, and the cocktail of powerful antipsychotics forced on an eleven-year-old boy,” the book synopsis states.
Sources close to the situation have said that Kate Gosselin is worried about what the book will reveal. An insider told the Daily Mail that Kate “had no idea this book was in the works” and that she is now “spiraling because she knows it’s about to hit the fan”.
Despite reports of her concern, Collin claims he has “the evidence to back everything up”. His mother, however, has maintained that his accusations are based on what she calls a “distorted perception of reality”.
Legal Standoff Looms Over Defamation Claims
In the same TikTok comment thread where she labeled her son, Kate also addressed a follower who suggested she sue Collin for defamation. She responded, “I can’t bc I’m a public figure. Rules are different unfortunately. Or I def would!”
She went on to explain that she consulted with a “high power LA attorney years ago when other ppl were putting crazy stuff out there and that’s what he said”. She maintained that the courts don’t recognize defamation claims for public figures in the same way.
Collin Gosselin has previously addressed this legal angle as well. In a 2024 interview with The U.S. Sun, he expressed a willingness to take lie detector tests alongside his mother. “For me, I have nothing to hide, I want to ask her these questions,” he said at the time.
Family Fractures and Support System
The feud has also divided the Gosselin siblings. Collin currently has a close relationship with his father, Jon Gosselin, and his sister Hannah Gosselin, who also chose to live with their father after their parents’ divorce. Hannah and Collin have remained supportive of each other.
However, Collin remains estranged from his other siblings, including his twin sisters, Mady and Cara, and his other sextuplet siblings, Aaden, Alexis, Joel, and Leah. In a recent interview, Collin claimed that Kate has him “blocked on every platform” and has made no effort to reconnect.
“I feel like she has so much guilt that weighs on her that I think I’d be a constant reminder that she needs to take accountability for her actions,” Collin said of his mother.

What Collin Gosselin’s Memoir Promises to Reveal
Collin’s book is set for release on October 13, 2026. It is currently available for pre-order on Amazon. The title, In the Shadow of Eight, refers to his experience growing up as one of eight children in a family that was constantly in the public eye.
In his announcement post, Collin wrote, “For a long time, I wasn’t sure I’d ever tell this story. Growing up, millions of people watched my life on television. People felt like they knew me. They knew my family. They watched me grow up. But there was so much they never saw”.
He added, “Writing this book forced me to revisit some of the hardest moments of my life, but it also gave me something I’ve been searching for for a long time: my voice. This isn’t the story people think they know. It’s the story I’ve lived”.
Paris Hilton has publicly supported Collin, writing on social media, “As someone who knows firsthand the lasting impact institutional trauma can have on a young person’s life, I was deeply moved by Collin’s honesty and strength”.
The memoir is expected to be one of the most detailed accounts of a family that rose to fame on TLC’s Jon & Kate Plus 8. The show documented the lives of the Gosselin family from 2007 until Kate and Jon’s divorce in 2009.
