Keanu Reeves is stepping into the lead role of Netflix’s long-gestating action film Maelstrom, taking over from Alan Ritchson, who left the project for reasons that have not been made public. The casting change was confirmed by multiple outlets on October 26, 2026, with Page Six Hollywood first reporting the news. The film, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, has been described in industry circles as “Die Hard in a hurricane” and carries a development history that stretches back more than three decades.
The Casting Switch: Reeves In, Ritchson Out
Reeves will play a Federal Marshal in the film, a role that was previously attached to Ritchson, the star of Amazon’s Reacher series. Deadline confirmed the change, reporting that Ritchson “exited the project for undisclosed reasons” and that representatives for Netflix declined to comment. Variety independently verified the casting shift, noting that it remains “unclear why Ritchson is departing the movie”. Neither Ritchson nor Netflix has offered a public explanation for the exit. Ritchson remains busy with other work: he recently headlined the Netflix sci-fi action film War Machine, which has a sequel in development, and he replaced Jason Momoa in Sony’s upcoming Helldivers movie.
What Maelstrom Is About
The film follows a Federal Marshal assigned to protect the fiancée of an arms dealer who has agreed to testify against her partner. The story unfolds over a single night as a hurricane makes landfall, cutting off communication and preventing reinforcements from reaching the pair. Trapped in a safe house, the marshal and the witness must fight off the arms dealer’s men while the storm rages outside. Variety described the setup simply: the duo “has to fight the onslaught of men working for the arms deal while dealing with the natural disaster outside their window”. The premise has been compared to Die Hard since the script first surfaced in the 1990s.
A Script That Waited 33 Years for Its Moment
Maelstrom began as a spec script written by the late Gregory Fitzpatrick. Jeff Robinov, then an agent, sold it to Warner Bros. in 1993 for a figure reported between $225,000 and $625,000 against a purchase price, which adjusts to roughly $500,000 to $1.4 million in today’s money. Warner Bros. outbid TriStar Pictures and Paramount Pictures for the script, which was widely described at the time as “Diehard in a hurricane”. The project never moved forward. Over the years, the studio considered action stars including Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone, and Steven Seagal, and director Renny Harlin was at one point considered to helm it. The script sat unused for decades.
How Netflix Revived the Project
Robinov eventually became president of Warner Bros. Pictures and later signed a production deal with Netflix. Maelstrom is the first project under that deal. Netflix executive Ori Marmur, known for reviving long-shelved scripts, pushed to bring the film back to life. Mark Bianculli, the writer behind How to Rob a Bank, is handling the current draft based on Fitzpatrick’s original screenplay. Robinov produces alongside Tabitha Shick of Talking Pictures. The film marks Collet-Serra’s second Netflix feature after Carry-On, the 2024 action thriller that became a major streaming hit for the platform.
Where Keanu Reeves Stands Right Now
Reeves remains one of the busiest action stars in Hollywood. Coming off John Wick: Chapter 4, he has a packed slate. He is in talks to lead James Wan’s English-language take on the South Korean crime film The Gangster, The Cop, The Devil for Paramount. He will reprise his voice role as Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, scheduled for 2027. He is also attached to star in an adaptation of Oliver Lowe’s novel Kill Current: A Jon Hendricks Thriller, the first project under his new production banner Two Dragonflies. Other upcoming projects include the Warner Bros. sci-fi film Shiver and The Entertainment System Is Down, directed by Ruben Östlund. Reeves made his Broadway debut in Waiting for Godot in 2025, reuniting with his Bill & Ted co-star Alex Winter.

Why Ritchson Left Remains an Open Question
Ritchson’s departure has not been explained by any of the parties involved. Netflix declined to comment when asked by Deadline. The actor has several projects in the pipeline, including The Man with the Bag, a holiday comedy with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Awkwafina that arrives on Prime Video on December 2, 2026. His schedule, combined with the Reacher series and the Helldivers film, may have made Maelstrom difficult to fit in, but no official reason has been given.
Release Details and Production Status
Maelstrom does not have a confirmed release date. ComingSoon reported that “production details and a release-date window for Maelstrom have yet to be officially confirmed”. Soap Central similarly noted that “no release date for Maelstrom has been confirmed yet” and that the film “is still in development”. Netflix has not announced a filming start date or additional cast members beyond Reeves. The film will stream on Netflix in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, India, and other markets where the service operates, with a global rollout expected once a release date is set.
“Significant upgrade,” one reader wrote in the comments under Deadline’s report on the casting change.
