JYJ member Kim Junsu has come under scrutiny after it was revealed that he was a victim of extortion. An Afreeca streamer allegedly blackmailed him for over ₩800 million KRW (approximately $569,000 USD) across 101 payments between September 2020 and October 2024.
Details of the Extortion
The case dates back to 2019, when the streamer reportedly met Kim Junsu and threatened to release audio recordings of sexually explicit conversations unless he paid money to keep them private.
Kim Junsu eventually decided to involve authorities, and the streamer was arrested after the police deemed the crime serious. Addressing fans through messages, Kim Junsu shared his perspective:
“That’s why I made up my mind. They were eventually arrested after the police concluded that the crime was serious, and they are currently undergoing a detention review.”
He also expressed regret about not acting sooner, acknowledging the potential negative impact of such news:
“Yes, I should have done it sooner, but I knew articles about this weren’t going to be good for us. But I do wonder if the news title they chose was their best option.”
Despite his confidence in his innocence, Kim Junsu admitted to feeling isolated over the past five years:
“But I am confident. I have done nothing wrong, and this is about something from five years ago. Since then, I thought that even something like this was my fault and didn’t meet anyone. Since we can only know the intention of someone after it’s been exposed…so it’s been five years since I promised myself that I wouldn’t meet anyone unless it was for business…”
Public Reactions Raise Questions
While fans have expressed support for Kim Junsu, public opinion has been less sympathetic. Many are questioning the circumstances that led him to pay such a large sum over several years:
- “Honestly I can’t understand how he paid ₩800 million KRW (approximately $569,000 USD) to her over five years just due to some audio files of them having sex.”
- “But if he did nothing wrong, why did he give her ₩800 million KRW (approximately $569,000 USD)? I’m truly curious!”
- “I don’t know him well because I’m uninterested, but he does seem like quite the floozy in various ways.”
- “Did he only report it after sending her money last month, because she got caught for doing drugs?”
- “It’s not even a video, but just an audio file, so I wonder what he did for him to give her ₩800 million KRW (approximately $569,000 USD).”
- “₩800 million KRW (approximately $569,000 USD) is pretty huge, but for him to pay her 101 times…”
