Kim Sejeong, known for her roles in The Business Proposal and Moon River, has officially confirmed her next drama project. The actress will lead the upcoming TVING series High School Queen, a fantasy action romance based on a popular webtoon. She stars alongside Bae Hyun Sung and Cho Han Gyul in this cross-era story.
The drama marks Kim Sejeong’s return to the small screen after her 2025 project Moon River. Production company Studio Dragon announced on July 31, 2026, that the series is moving forward with its main cast. Filming is set to begin in August 2026.
A Warrior Queen Reborn In A Modern High School
High School Queen tells the story of Kim Chungha, the greatest warrior of the Joseon Dynasty and a Queen Consort. She dies and wakes up 400 years later in the body of Kim Dajin, a high school student who suffers from severe school bullying.
Using her royal dignity and warrior instincts, Chungha takes on the bullies who control the school. The story blends action, fantasy, romance, and coming-of-age themes as the queen adjusts to modern life while delivering justice. The drama also explores the love and dreams she could not fulfill in her past life.
The series adapts the webtoon of the same name by writer critie and illustrator Nehae. The webtoon has been running on Naver and WEBTOON since 2024. It has gained a strong readership for its mix of action, fantasy, and school drama.
Kim Sejeong Takes On A Demanding Dual Role
Kim Sejeong plays the dual roles of Queen Kim Chungha and the bullied student Kim Dajin. She shared her excitement about the character, saying:
“I felt that this character contains all the diverse sides of the roles I’ve played so far, so I am preparing with both excitement and a sense of responsibility. As it is a project where the narrative of the characters and the thrills of each episode are significant, I am practicing hard, including acting and action stunts. I will do my absolute best until the end to provide great fun and emotion to viewers through the character of Chungha.”
The actress is known for her physical acting and comic timing, which makes her a strong fit for the action-heavy role. She has previously shown her action skills in The Uncanny Counter and her romantic comedy skills in The Business Proposal.
Bae Hyun Sung And Cho Han Gyul Join As Male Leads
Bae Hyun Sung (Family by Choice) plays two characters across different time periods. In the Joseon era, he is Seong Wonjoo, a royal guard who deeply admires Queen Chungha. In the present day, he becomes Seong Siwoo, the ace player of the school’s kendo club.
Bae Hyun Sung shared his thoughts on the project:
“The story itself, which blends everything from action to romance and fantasy, was interesting and fun. As it is a drama that crosses between the past and the present, I am looking forward to showing many different sides of myself. I will prepare diligently so that I can greet viewers with a great project.”
Cho Han Gyul (Undercover Miss Hong) completes the lead cast. He plays King Lee Nyeong, the absolute ruler of Joseon, and Lee Do Yoon, a mysterious transfer student in the modern timeline. His modern character hides a secret that complicates things for Chungha and Siwoo.
Cho Han Gyul expressed his excitement:
“It is an honor and a joy to be part of such a great project as ‘High School Queen.’ I was so excited when I heard the news of my casting, and I am already looking forward to each day of filming. I will prepare hard to show viewers my best, so please show lots of anticipation and support.”
